This is our first year with our chickens. We have 29 in all. About 4 diffrent breeds, from big to small sized. They are all trying to mate. Especially the little guys with the big girls...lol.. Boy can they run.

We have 10 roosters out of the 29. Is this to many for our flock? They are all together.. So far they are all getting along out there.

Another questions is about eggs??? When do they start laying? How do you know if it's a egg for eating or a baby chicken??(Is that a stupid question?)

What would you all suggest for lining the nesting boxes with?

Does it matter if diffrent breeds are mating?

Thanks in advance.

1) you don't need a rooster to have eggs if that is all you want.
2) one rooster per 10 hens
3) if you aren't breeding to sell then it does not matter if you mix the breeds
4) if you have a rooster then the eggs are goung to be fertile, they are still good to eat. only if you want to hatch them will you get chicks
5) depending one the breed, you should get eggs at 5 to 6 months of age, give or take a few weeks

I hope that answers most of your questions

Welcome to BYC! I'm pretty new too.

You'll get the answers you need here at BYC.

But that is really too many roos. 1:10 is more than enough.

And as long as you like your chickens mixed breeds, than I say let them have babies.
