Rooster vs Hens

We did end up rehoming our rooster to a local chicken ranch

She’s intergraded back into the flock seamlessly and the hen house is back to the calm and peaceful environment it once was.

Two additional hens have started laying again since then.💜
That is fantastic! And the solutions you have been able to find for the chickens that are not working out for you are wonderful as well.

I must say that I was always of the mind that once you took ownership of an animal, it was your responsibility. I do pet sitting and I sat for a woman with 2 dogs she owned for years. And the one just was not 100% working. It was not terrible, but neither of them (owner nor dog) were thriving. The owner worked really hard to find that dog the perfect home for the dog, and I think he really did do better. After that, I had a new perspective upon very responsible re-homing. That you have been able to responsibly re-home your rooster and have found a similar responsible re-homing option for your hens is outstanding. ✨

Thank you so much! I honestly felt the same way too but, the integrity of the hen house was at stake and it turned out to be a really good decision for both the hens and the rooster. I am trying to get to a multigenerational flock so that they don’t all stop laying at the same time. We will be keeping two of the non-layers for sure one is the flock mama/dominant hen and one is the love of my youngest son’s life. Making the decision to rehome has been extremely difficult for me and breaks my heart honesty but I do feel that if the others are truly done laying, that allowing them an open space to free range until their last days is a pretty happy ending for them. I will likely cry if we rehome them but I know they will be ok and that we’ve given them a very good life.
