Ok its 109 here right now and my chickens are panting?

The portland airport? That should keep you away for a few hours I guess if so. How old are they? If not too young of chicks, I think I would fill a pan with water and ice and put it in the shade of your pen. If they get too hot they can just hang out around it till you get back.

Girls, girls, girls, bEhave will you:lol: Swimming cap, check, floates, check, goggles, check ok the girls are good to go for today. LOL:D We are up to 92 outside at 11:30am. Yikes. I sprayed down the run with the sprinkler last night and this morning, put up two umbrellas, put out a 2gal jug of frozen Ice water and one frozen bottle in there waterer. My girls are close to laying as well but mostly I was freeking out because I had never seen a chicken pant! (Or where pants for that matter. I know I know.) Anyway I go out about every couple of hours and check on them. Thanks for all the suggestions:) Oh congrats on the eggs:)

Well we are at 100 as of right now. I went out this am and watered down the roof and ext wals of the coop as well as the run and a light spray into the coop. I just took some popsicles out to the girls and because I had em in a blue plastic bowl nobody wnated to get too close. I thought I was gonna tip over laughing. One would start sneaking up to check it out and more would start pushing then when she got too close she would jump over the bowl and run and they would push the next one up there. This went on over and over. I was laughing like crazy.

I finally they were just going to make themselves hotter so as much as I hate for them to eat from the ground I did it I tossed the popsicles on the ground and the scramble was on. I almost wish the heat would cause our girls to slow production. We have 9 eggs so far today. I think we are going to drown in eggs

We already have 5 doz in the fridge and I gave 2 doz away yesterday. I have a sign out but no takers yet. I have been told ya can crack em in a sealable bowl and freeze but that just don't sound good to me.

I know ya all probablly already know but just a friendly reminder. LOTS of water and shade for you and ALL OF YOUR CRITTERS. They depend on us.
We will make it through this OK.

I don't have eggs yet, but order from an organic delivery truck that passes through. 15 dozen is a lot cheaper than 1 dozen at a time, so I have to freeze. It works great. Especially for scrambled. Also can use for cooking. But much better to make a friend and give them away if you can.

I assume ya have to take em outta the shell right.
I am trying most anything to get rid of them but since the neighbor also has chickens (where I stole my first 3 layers from) she keeps the other 4 close neighbors supplied. At least we won't go hungry. I can get pretty creative as long as I have eggs.

Yes to the out of the shell. I have tried to do it without, but haven't been able to remove the shell without thawing first. I will tell you that they didn't crack when frozen, so it may be that it would work without cracking them into a bag. I just haven't gotten that far yet. My test set were some old eggs that I didn't plan on eating.

I had also planned to crack them into ice cube trays, freezing and then putting into a baggie. But I just kept putting it off. So when I did it, I just wanted to get it done. Since then I have just done it this way.

And yest the perfect protein.

You could always cook them up and mix them in the chicken mash a couple of times a week also.

OOPS Sorry about the hijack.....\\\\

Boy is it hot! Just went to the feed store to buy chick grit, and picked up a jicama at the grocery store for the chicks. First time I tried this.... They are loving it because it is extra cold right now.

ugh...its 101 here in S Everett/Silverlake atm!!!

My poor babies...only a week old and this heat is awful for them

But, since Momma has decided to take them outside..and it is slightly cooler out there probably, everyone is in the run grabbing what breezes they can in the shaded part. I am soooooo glad we have the big lilac tree next to the coop/run!! At least they dont get the direct sun over all the run!

I got them another waterer today, and put ice cubes in. So now there are 4 waterers around for everyone... 2 inside (one full size and one chick sized), and two outside, I also got a melon for all. I am sure the babies will be pigging out on it as well, but they have been scratching around for the chick starter that i throw out in the am and the pm for them to look for with Momma and Auntie Mercedes. I took the melon out of the fridge a few mins ago and set it out there for them... the chicks think they died and went to heaven. At least I know they are getting water/liquids...they are all sucking down the melon juice. I figure a few days of cold melon wont hurt them or Momma Esther.... cos at least this way they are having liquids to keep them cool and hydrated, and they ARE eating the chicks starter.

This must be pay back for all the snow this winter

I even played Xmas songs for the girls to give them something else to think about other than the heat lol They apparently ALL love "Let it Snow" lol...they all sit down when it plays and close their eyes and relax when it plays. Its so cute...even the babies do it

Its now 102 but the girls are doing much better today with there run sprayed down and the ice water and later frozen blueberrys there fav.

Usually those of us in northern NV vacation on the Oregon Coast to cool off! Jeesh! We're only at 93 today with thunderstorms expected this afternoon.

My chickens have been staying cool with ice packs in their water buckets and plenty of water to play in on really hot days...but we've only had a few days in triple digits.

Hope it cools off for everyone soon!
