Ok, so if you were following my last thread with the eggs from my neighbor, this is the continuation of that, but a new start. Ok, let me start with today, and where the last thread left off.

So, the one chick had partially zipped and then died. Then the second zipped, and I helped it a little and sadly, it was dead too and looked all wrong. Head was at a weird angle and the intestines were not all inside.

So, I thought enough to candle the remaining eggs and see whats up. 'Ugh' does not begin to explain what I felt.

Of the remaining 2 eggs that should have been about to hatch both had died sometime ago. Then I candled the younger eggs and saw that none of them were at the same stage in developement, all had perished, and roughly half of them were "yolkers" (not even fertile). Some had blood rings, some were 'floaters'. It was sad, and disheartening.

So I opened the bator up, tossed all the eggs, and cried a little. Then through some miracle....I 'fall' into more eggs!

Ok, so I'm sitting here cleaning out the bator, ready to pack it away for awhile or something when the phone rings. A family from town that we know from 4H calls to talk about something completely different and in the course of talking I hear a rooster crow in the background!

So, I ask if they let their roos run with the gals and of course they do. I ask if they might have some fertile eggs I could buy to try out my bator, and they say "We're about to go collect some right now! Come on out and you can just HAVE them!"

I get there in record time and I am handed two dozen still warm eggs. All colors and sizes, but ALL FRESHLY LAID (which after the neighbors weird eggs, I needed!) and their chickens were georgious! So, I head home careful to avoid pot holes and bumps with my precious cargo.

This time, I mark each egg (with pencil) with a number and I log everything about it. I let them come to room temp naturally before I set them (lucky I had already disinfected the bator!) and there they sit now. I set them at 5pm, so I am expecting hatching around 5pm on August 2nd...is that right?! MAN! Thats a ways away! Ugh!

So, I'm starting all over again, but doing it this time with fresh eggs that we are SURE are no farther along than today...lol

I'm happy about the new ones, but sort of mourning the others.

Oh yes, and I DID take pics and will post pics weekly here!

I am so sorry things didn't turn out well before but I am thankful for a fresh start for you!!

Good luck,

I hope everything goes better this time. I'm so sorry about the last ones.

I did a lot of research this time and found some really interesting things.

Please keep us posted.

Awww, what a shame the others were bad. Its dissheartening when that happens. I have had a few bad hatches. ALMOST makes a person not want to try...but then had to with the duck eggs after momma duck dissapeared. I wish you the BEST of luck....this will be a good one, I can feel it!!

Well, my eggs have gone from 24 to 36 overnight!

The people I got these eggs from called me to ask if I might want to pop a few 'pure bred' eggs in there to and see what happens. Of course I couldn't say no, since the eggs in there were technically on Day 0 yesterday because I set them after 5pm, so today would be Day 1 so I was going to add more eggs, today would be the day to do it, right? Least thats how I rationalized it to myself! lol

So, they list off some of the breeds they have, and they hit one that a good friend of mine here (hehe, YOU know who you are! lol) has wanted soooooo badly for sooooo long, that I stopped them and said "Yup! I'll take some of those!"

So, I've now added 12 Penedesenca (4 Partridge, 4 Crele, and 4 Wheaten) eggs to the bator!

So, I begin Day 1 with 36 eggs, instead of 24! Maybe my chances of a better hatch will increase with more eggs?

I'm trying really hard this time to do everything right. Before I just sort of let it happen the first time All but one hatched, 2nd time only one hatched. Good luck with yours!

I'm so glad you're encouraged enough to try again. Wish I was. Anyway, have you calibrated your hygrometer? Are you sure your thermometer is correct? These are problems I've had with my Hova's and Sportsman and my hatch rate has been veeery low. I found that neither of my hygrometers were correct and so the humidity was running much lower than it showed. I had several chicks zip & die because the membrane was too dry and they could not get through it. Several died in the shell, I guess they couldn't pip because of the membrane. Others just partly developed then died. My problem is my air conditioning and I cannot keep the humidity high enough. All I'm saying is that you must be absolutely sure that your therm/hygro is correct. I'm wondering because of the problems you had with your last hatch. Please, I'm not criticizing, I just don't want you to have to go through what I did time after time....
