Folly's Place - Thanks for the feedback. I had thought of Easter Eggers - will look into them as well. I live in Rhode Island, so can be hot and cold depending. I've read lots of good things about Buff Orpingtons so am almost sure about getting 1 or 2 of them - need to read a bit more and decide on the others. Based on these 2 comments - might not start with silkies at the moment. Thanks!

Speckled Sussex hens are beautiful and often very friendly; look at them too.
Have you checked out Henderson's breed chart, feathersite, and the cackle and Murray McMurray catalogs, at least? Then there's 'Storey's Guide to Poultry Breeds' with more beautiful pictures!
