I was just outside changing over their pond water. AKA Bail and refill. After the water was back to normal level Ling lIng got out and preened for a bit. Then she dabbled in the over flow. Whe whole time Flake was in the water watching her. THen Ling Ling got back in the water, and Flake mated with her. She was on her back, she grabbed her neck, and the appropriate manuevers occoured in the rear section.

Ling Ling is a runner duck. and Flake is a call duck. Supposed to be a girl.

Is this typical behavior when there is no drake around??

Or is Flake really a boy?

Thanks!

But she doesn't have the drake feather???

Ling Ling is 17 weeks old. She's been doing the soliciting behavior a LOT lately. I wondered if maybe that would entice Flake??? I don't know... these are my first ducks. lol

I wouldnt be too worried. My girls are currently "mating" with each other as I dont have an active drake. One way to really tell is ( kinda gross but still happens) watch them mate, and as soon as the call gets off look for a Hmmmm... noodle.... . Sometimes they hang out a few seconds before retracting back into hiding.
