..last week i purchased 5 chicks..2 RIR, 1 white rock, 2 black sex-links.....then i called the co-op back 2 days ago...they had some other breeds in..so....lol..i went and got 3 more,.. 1 silver spangled hamburg, 1 silver lakenvelder, and 1 polish(straight run, praying its a pullet!!)...so now i'm up to eight..then they said they were getting another kind in this week cant rember what kind..think its name begins with a W..and it lays red eggs?..any one hear of it before?..so i plan to go get another one IF its a pullet batch..so...that will bring me up to 9.. which brings me to why i'm really writing this post ....now i'm worried my coop wont be big enough..were are still building..but its almost done..just adding walls now..its size is..8 long x6 wide x6 ft high then it slopes to 4 ft(dont ask me why he did that) but...is it gonna be big enough now?....or will hubby have to kill me when i tell him to expand it?...and how much roost space will i need?..they will have access to an outside area..pretty big spot...cant really measure it..its on a hill and circles around the coop..so..if i havent confused everyone...lol..any help will be appreciated!..thanks..(new chicken junkie)

You have to expand it ... by a HUGE amount of space.

Because ... it's evident that you are truly addicted which means you will not just end up with these nine chickens.

In reality your coop is big enough for roughly 12 chickens if you allow the four foot per chicken space requirements. And, by having the outside run area that will help with space also.

So - I'd encourage your hubby to build bigger now. Otherwise, he'll be adding on later.....

First off...Welcome to the Club!!!

Secondly, 8 x 6 = gives you 48 sq. feet

Divide that by 4 and the good news is that you have room for 12 chickens!

Figure 8 - 10" of roost space for each bird. We use 2 x 4's, with the 4" wide side for them to perch. This helps them keep their feet covered in the winter.

Hope this helps!
