So here’s the daily egg report: Roo is my little overachiever—drops one perfect medium to large white egg almost every single day. Gypsy Chick? Total diva. She lays whenever her muses inspire her, produces a dainty cream-colored egg, and then spends the rest of the day strutting.

And here’s the mystery—there are only two laying hens in this operation. Two! Yet my egg basket looks like it’s been stocked by a black-market poultry syndicate: cream minis, crisp whites, and the occasional medium-to-large brown, and some tinted something. Someone explain, because I’m either being punked by junglefowl… or my hens are secretly shape-shifting.

Oh, and because life wasn’t already egg-citing enough, I’ve now got five brand-new chicks peeping in the background. Yep, I’m in deep. Obsessed, outnumbered, and oddly entertained.

So I didn't disappear- I had major surgery abroad and came home to well- more chickens!

I was wondering where you went! Hope the surgery went well.

Didn’t you lose a bunch of chickens recently? Is it possible some of them survived and just sneak back to lay eggs then disappear into the forest again?

Yeah, I lost quite a few chickens recently—that’s why I’m down to just the two. They were hand-raised in my living room, ridiculously tame. (Well, except Gypsy… she hatched from an egg I rescued, full junglefowl spirit—, just along for free buffet apparently and is besties with roo.)

We eventually found what was left of the others (ill save you the details), and the police tracked down a certain individual who finally admitted to it. So now? Let’s just say the property is upgraded: fence, gate, and barbed wire. We have a full security system around the entire property- hardwired trail cameras, motion deectors, anti icky devises etc. I only have the two hens.

Here is Roo and Gypsy.

Edit: I know it’s them—their egg songs are impossible to miss. Roo, in particular, belts it out so loud in the mornings from the nest box that I sometimes think she’s a full-on rooster. But then hubby and I see it with our own eyes, and sure enough… out pops an egg. Today it was Gypsy- that cream colored item and then she ran around talking about it at the front door of the home.

So now hubby has seen chicks hatch in the incubator, and seen a egg being laid. HAHA

There are a few possibilities.

1. Someone is playing a trick on you.

2. A chicken/chickens from somewhere are stopping by to lay eggs in your nest box.

3. Your hens are somehow hiding the eggs so it seems like you are getting more than 2 a day.

If they only recently started laying, that could explain the random sizes and colors of the eggs.

1. No one can play tricks- not where we live.
2. No extra chickens are on any of the cams at any point.
3. I never get more than 2 a day.

But yeah- they recently started laying (they were born on Easter) and I hatched them both from random eggs. So they could have who-knows-what-bloodlines. Even Roo has a bunch of speckled feathers.

I just thought it was a interesting data point- as the eggs are so unique, coming from what should be straightforward.

Their systems haven't settled yet, so yeah, strange things can happen. Your hens are both beautiful, btw.

That is crazy. How infuriating that must be
Turns out he paid some kind of fine to the government—but not a cent to me. Instead, I was the one who had to prove my chickens were “pets” and not just livestock.

So when the inspector showed up, I called out “Chick Chicks!” and what was left of the flock came barreling over. Roo even crouched, then leapt right into my lap like a dog showing off. I looked at the inspector and asked, “So… where are my reparations?” Crickets.

So here I am, starting fresh with new varieties of fluffy butts—this time better equipped for defense—while we’ve turned our land into a fortress. (Yes, complete with a moat. Chicken kingdom secured.)

Sounds like a war zone! Some people are beyond crazy and it is not fun to have to deal with them. I hope happier and safer days are ahead for you and your flock.
