I read that they are ready to lay/butcher at 6-8 weeks. What is the butcher weight? How many would it take to feed a grown man (DH eats about 1/2 a 5lb chicken when I roast a whole one)? I wouldn't be getting any quail right now but they have me intrigued! Do you just skin them or do some of you pluck them? Any pics of the live or cleaned quail are most welcome.

Also, do most of you breed to sell eggs or breed to eat? Thanks!!!

Have you seen this post::: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1554953#p1554953

SHOULD
help answer most of your butchering questions.

As for weight, depends on which bird you get... Pharoahs live weight is arounf 6 oz Jumbo live weight is around 13+ ozs (some said to get an lb in weight, but I haven't seen one of those yet).

I breed for genetic reasons (colors) most others breed for the mere enjoyment of raising, OR for meat and or eggs

I just started with mine and have really enjoyed them. I'm going to process my first ones in a couple of weeks and have already started to want more colors.

No eggs yet.

But hope to try pickeling them soon.
