Borax mixed with apple jelly works great! I put it in a container with a small whole in it (so they can climb in and get it but my other pets can't) and set it up in a window so the kids can't get it either. They get some of it and take it to the ant hill and it kills them. You may see droves come in and get some but don't worry it does work!

Also for outside you can use a mixture of grits, water, and sugar:

Great idea! That sounds like something simple to mix up and use. I'll give it a try.

Nana Kat - Where do you get DE from? I wonder if garden centers have it. There's a TLC right down the road from me. I should stop in there and ask.

I have only found it at garden centers. and have always had good luck with it. I let my chickens roll in it ... no mites...ever. Havent found a bug it didnt kill or an animal that it would hurt! Love the stuff!

Peaches : We need to come up with a plan to mow and weed eat the grounds, I still need to move all that heavy eq & bleachers around. Plus 7000 other things LOL. PM me or call and we can make a plan.

I plan on trying to mow the grounds this week once the rain lets up. If someone is willing to operate a weedeater. My shoulders just wont hold out to weedeat very long.

That would be me I guess, I will weedwack and you can ride around throwing grass everywhere LOL. Later in the week is better it will be drier and closer to the date so we don't have to do it twice. Call me.

no, I really dont. They are all worm free, mite free and on 20% layer pellets....and they are all first year hens, I was gettin a lot of eggs from them a month or so ago, almost an egg a day per hen then just BAM, stopped laying...

Here is a trick I found that works to kick start egg production that I believe someone on here on BYC recommended. First raise the protein level. You can do this by adding gamebird grower which is 28% or adding soy powder or sunflower oil. Do this about a week then cut them off of food for a day. I know this sounds mean but they put on mass really fast when the protein level is raised like this. The fasting usually kick starts egg production. Not exactly sure why but it works for me everytime. Since I free range my birds they get cut off every two weeks or so for a couple of days. First so they will eat the food that is kicked out and second the hens pop out eggs like gang busters for a week after the fasting. Of course they forage but I do not count that in their diet because they use a lot of energy foraging.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to hear I'm not the only one whose hens quit laying..it's been three weeks. The new Wyandottes started laying this week and one of my BA/RS has begun laying. Will try Muesky's trick. Any one have luck with cayenne pepper? ...that's what my MIL suggested.

Congrats...........

Rainy question: I have 6 - 12 wk old mixed chickens, 3 - 8 wk wynadottes and 2 ducks. I normally let them free range but I'm worried about all the rain.
Their run is not really flooded but there are some pools that really cut down on the room (planning on fixing that after the rain stops).
Will they be OK to free range? I'm worried about the bigger ones picking on the littler ones in boredom.

I dont believe it is the protein, I have them on 20% layer pellets and they are getting a scratch mixture everyday that consists of 1/3 black sunflower seeds....
I believe it is the food I have been feeding...egg laying stopped around the same time I started feeding Big V layer pellets, gonna switch back to nutrena and see what happens...
