So you just put an apple in the microwave and his spurs fell off ?

Sounds like some kind of Voo Doo to me!

So do you have to put an apple in the microwave for each rooster ?

MAllen - We had a couple maple trees that looked like your pictures. After looking at a piece of bark from our trees, our local nursery guy said our problem was caused by bugs under the bark. He gave us a concentrated spray, which we applied from the base of the tree to as high as we could reach. I'm remembering we also treated the soil with something else, but it was years ago, so I don't remember the details, other than we put pellets into a root feeder and shot the chemical into the ground.

Eval is finished! I won't know the results until next week, but it seemed okay. Students asked about the hose (siphon for the duck pond - cleaned with bleach before I brought it to school) so we discussed siphons for a few mintues. That led to complaints about the high price of gasoline, so I had to redirect [siphons are not to be used to remove gas from your neighbor's car]. Anyway, I think a few students had an "Ah haaaah!" moment when I turned the hose and rope into a giant coaster. Wrap 6, figure 8 through the closest coil section, wrap 6, and so on. I think we're going to end up with some really neat baskets this year.

First Lunch - Time to grab a bite and grade some papers. Have a great day, everyone.

I don't much but from just looking at the pics, those are elm trees and they get a disease called Dutch Elm Disease. Once they have it, I don't think there is anything you can do to save them but again I am no expert.

I was going to say Elm tree, too. Bummer about the bark peeling off.

I was just going to ask that he explain, but I like your post better.

I think the principal of it is to stick the hot potato or apple onto the spur and the heat and steam softens the spur to where it just slides off.
I was just giving Wayne a hard time!

Oh, I understood you were giving him a hard time, I just didn't understand how a hot potato/apple would remove a spur.

I am thinking the elm disease as well on that tree...we have a bunch of that out here. Plus they are not a real hardy or long lived tree. Whoever brought them out here should have been kicked. they were a great salesman but not great at longevity or praticallity...anyways.

Poco - if it weren't for rabbit trails my kids would never learn! I think that is a neat way to do it...I doubt my hoodlums could even figure out the siphon thing
