everyone to their own...I have paid less than $25 for a bird, but I have also paid more for a bird. It all depends on what you are looking for and how bad you want it, and if you want the best you gotta pay for it. Just my two cents...personally I cant afford the best but I have probably averaged $19 a bird for what I have here....

We either buy chicks at a farm center or we raise our own...less than $1 average per hen for us....great quality brown eggs and lovely suculent birds for the table.

Today was spent enjoying two little grandsons who came to visit...tossing scratch to the chickens and feeding cubes to the cow. Crawling thru the big tractors and a tour thru the garden munching on asparagus was fun too.

why do you pay that much gotgame?

what kind of birds are they?

"the best" for what exactly?

just curious, not wanting to start trouble.

I am not into showing myself, at least not at this point in time, but I pay that for the best show/breeder quality I can find that is for sale, as I WOULD really enjoy seeing others win with birds that I bred and raised. I attempt to buy the best type, best color, from the best bloodline of birds i can find according to the bantam standard. I want to raise some birds, and I want to produce the best I can, and of course i always find myself liking the hard to find varieties, so they will cost more when you find them...it costs just as much to feed a chicken from TSC as it does a good quality bird that is worth something besides for their eggs or their meat. No offense taken..

Good morning all. Well I'm ready for work. Maybe I'll actually make it all day today. I'm packing all my meds, so that when I start to feel bad, I can hide the symptoms and pretend nothing is wrong. I think I've had 4 full days of work in the past 3 weeks. I need to be able to work all day today.

When we got home last night, we were taking care of all the animals. As Jordan was tending to the mice, he let one escape. So I now have a mouse running loose in my house that appears to be faster than my cats. They have been making all kinds of noise all night long while trying to catch the blasted thing. I think my cats have become fat and lazy. Maybe its time to break out the traps.

I hope everyone has a great day. Its time for me to head out the door.

as far as i am concerned, pedigree's for poultry are a farce., and no it isnt common in show chickens. 99.9% of breeders will laugh at you if you asked for a pedigree.

pedigree doesnt mean squat in a chicken, show or otherwise, if it did we wouldnt have to cull so heavy every year.

someone is just using a "word" to jack up their price on egg's. i personaly wouldnt purchase eggs or birds from a person doing this.

of course i wouldnt pay more for chocolate colored eggs over white eggs either, eggs are eggs. i have never noticed a difference in taste.

i have been noticing lately that everyone is talking about how high their birds and eggs are selling at auctions. i have also noticed people giving way to much for "show birds" because of who raised them, [mabey], or the "bloodlines" it is a shame that we are letting ourselves get priced out of our own means. there is no way a 25 dollar hen is going to lay enough eggs to pay for herself and feed. i wont give 25 bucks for a good show bird, much less a layer.

it is becoming like the fighting cock thing all over again, people with more money than brains decide they have to have something and pay a ridiculous price for it. then joe schmoe heres that so and so got 100 dollars for a bird, so now he has to get 100 dollars for his birds no matter what. and here we go, cant by a chicken for less than 50-75 bucks a head.

last time i saw eggs sell for more than 5 bucks a dozen, i laughed my fool head off at the person that bought them. they are eggs, if hatching you stand to get mabey 25% hens and 75% cocks out of what hatches. where does the common sense figure in to that? my god i get 3 tines as many cocks as i want now!

all i am saying is everyone needs to watch what they pay at auctions and swaps for birds and eggs, doesnt matter what they are. pay what you want, but remember that a 10 dollar hen will lay as much or more than a 20 dollar hen. and you can get twice as many!

sorry for the rant, and i did not mean to step on anyones toes.

jim

I cant agree more... its like in everything else sooner or later it becomes a money game and whos got the best .. i agree that an egg is an egg and a chicken is a chicken sure there might be some that are worth more because of how rare they may be and some may be a better show quaility but im pretty sure that all chickens lay eggs and as for me thats what i want

Good morning all, hey OklaDoodle after you let the dogs out and get the wife off to work, how bout running down here and help me load up three sows to take to the sale, it is wet and muddy here so it will be a pain getting them loaded, I am thinning my sow herd down to two sows and the boar, have one feeder pig left to sell and still have Peepot(that's what the DW calls him), the little pig with the sheath hurnia, I am thinking about butchering him and roasting him up for the Poops!!! It rained off and on all night here in north central Okla. I have not been out yet this morning, can hear the rain though, Dakota left yesterday for Colorado, on a Spring Break trip with his Youth group, I am up, ususally up at 4am, but I am off this week for Spring Break too, I have lots of stuff to get caught up on, like build pens for chickens and pigs, get my garden planted, work on some type of extra brooders for chicks hatching, move chickens, you know just norman everyday stuff around the farm. I'll be in and out today, Lynn
