You really should try hatching eggs again. It's really fun ... ok, until you've hatched a few thousand ... then you get a little tired of it (at least I did).

Maybe the guy you got your eggs from didn't have good roosters around to fertilize the eggs.

Candling eggs is really easy, with a small LED maglight flashlight.

It's fun buying chicks in the springtime, but the pleasure of hatching your own is priceless!

Atwoods usually has a bin full of pullets that are already sexed, and I've never bought a cockeral out of the pullet bin. Depending on what breeds are there when we go, I can usually pick pullets out of the straight run bin, which are priced a little bit cheaper than the pullets. The one kind of bad thing is that they don't always get all the breeds in at the same time - sometimes they're all sex-link or Rhode Island Reds, but lots of times there is a good mix of breeds - we'll just have to see, which is part of the fun!

Maribeth - I got two gardening books this Christmas. The book I'm currently reading is called How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land Than You Can Imagine. It's by John Jeavons. I'm going to read chapter 8 on companion planting tonight. The second book is called Micro Eco-Farming. It's by Barbara Berst Adams, and her writing is almost spiritual in nature. I was attracted to this book when reading sample pages on Amazon. Chapter 4 is called Three New Foundations for "Restoring Eden." The book focuses on working with nature rather than making nature work for you.

Joe - Sorry to hear about the accident. I'm glad you are okay. Pink eye can be miserable. Tell you little one not to touch anybody with her eyes

That's what our pediatrician always told our girls when they had pink eye.

This is day 15 in the 'bator with the eggs in it now, should I candle them now or wait for day 18. I candled them on day 8 and tossed all that were clear, which were my cochin eggs which I suspected would not hatch.
