Welcome Jessi! I have added you to the Okie Roll Call. I put your town as Woodward, but if you are really at one of the smaller burgs let me know and I'll correct it. What kind of chickens are you getting? There is a lot to learn here - just about any question about poultry can be answered on BYC.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma.

Unlike some of us who "buy first, figure out how to house it later" it sounds like you are doing your research before acquiring your chickens. Raising chickens is fairly easy - feed them quality food, protect them from varmits, and provide them adequate shelter. The hard part is limiting yourself to only as many as you have shelter to accomodate, refraining from incubating more eggs than you know where to brood and grow them out, and not buying birds just because they are "cool looking"

That said, mark May 14 on your calendar because we are having a meet/eat/visit/sell or swap birds - get together in Fletcher that day. It will be very family friendly and you will enjoy putting faces with screen names. It is also a cool way to get birds from one part of the state to another part of Oklahoma.

This is definately the place to find various breeds of chickens in Oklahoma.

Buckguy raises welsummers, as does one of his neighbors. He is in Choctaw.
There are some others that have welsummers as well. With welsummers, if you want them for their dark egg shells, you want to be sure they are already laying before you spend big bucks on them, since the egg color varies from hen to hen and even over several months of laying time.
