Great to have you here. It is a little quiet right now but believe me it will pick up later.
Lots of great Oklahoma folks here.
Glad you are one us us!

I came across an old email from a very smart chicken man that I talk to once and a while.
Just thought I'd share it. Maybe someone will like it.

BLUE EGG INFO:
The blue pigment added to the shell is actually a waste product that
is produced by the bird's liver. The blue pigment is produce from a
substance called biliverdin. Biliverdin is a byproduct that comes from
breaking down old red blood cells. Sometmes a bird does not produce a
large amount of biliverdin and therefore they do not make much pigment.

The more eggs a bird lays also can affect the color. Birds that lays
twice a week will have a darker egg than one that lays 5 times a week.

Anything that would effect the production of biliverdin will effect
the egg color (lack of nutrition and disease).

One of my projects I am working on is a bluegger. As my blueggers get
older they stop adding as much pigment to the shell.
The eggs from my blueggers are not very dark and I am currently working on my hens
producing a darker blue egg and refining some of the characteristics.

I had an interesting thing happen regarding egg color. I had only one serama in a cage. I was feeding re-cycled egg shells as a calcium source and her eggs were white. When I gave her oyster shell, her eggs changed to tan the very next egg...so a hen does not always lay the same color egg. It can depend on her calcium source.

Nice seramas Junebug! Glad to see you have colors other than black!lolTheir size looks really small. I think the silkie feathers makes them look stockier. How many do yo have in all?

Turned into a cold drizzly day here! Still in the fortys!Must be redbud winter!lol.next week will proably be dogwood winter! We do need a little rain,it will really make things green up when it does warm back up.

Joe I think Donnie meant "train" although I wouldn't mind seeing a chicken raine, that is if it wasn't all roosters!

I like other colors, but I'm working really hard on the blacks, because when we apply for ABA recognition, I want to be one of the 5 breeders. This is "Tatertot", sucking it up!
