I generally keep "chicks" of all varieties separate from the rest of the flock until they are large enough that they can't go through the chicken wire. When it is warm enough, I keep them in a cage with hardware cloth 6 inches tall around the bottom, with the cage placed in the run with the other chickens. It is disheartening to see the chicks going in and out of the chicken wire since they aren't safe from predators/cats when they are outside the run.

I had bantams several years ago and they hatched their own clutch of eggs and the chicks escaped and we had to chase them through the woods. Fast little buggers for such tiny babies and hard to catch!!! That's why I thought I'd get some input for my new pens...

What about the 1" chicken wire. It comes in 50 foot rolls in 2', 4' and 6' widths.
I use a 2' width around the lowere edge of one of my grow out pens in addition to the 2" chicken wire. It narrows the holes a little more by the overlap.

I keep my broody hens each in a separate cage with their hatch until the babies are feathering out. Then I move them to the grow out pen.

Elevensies, Okies (Wish is was Second-Breakfast instead) - Hope everyone is able to enjoy a bit of today's sunshine. I'm stuck inside.

City - Hope your video shoot goes well. Tell Noah if he gets a bad report he's not going to get any snails tonight. I'll check e-mail before I leave work. We can meet at the Tractor Supply in Glenpool this evening to return ducks if that fits with your schedule. I leave school at 3:30, which puts me at TSC between 4:30 and 5:00, depending on evening traffic. I think it's on 161st and Highway 75. Google for accuracy. I'm relying on antiquated memory cells.

Saw Buckguy/Monty this morning. His incubators are full and he has cool eggs and I am close by

Why is it that everyone else's hatching eggs seem so much cooler than your own to hatch? Of course, in my case, I don't have separate breeding pens for the varieties, so they tend to be "mixed" chicks.

My incubators are full also, but I have broody hens that are getting new eggs today.

Buckguy asked me to tell everyone hello. He is being held hostage in a Chinese Laundry.

Actually, his computer fried in the last electric storm and it will hopefully be repaired soon.

He is having internet withdrawals, as is his son.
