A lot of old folks from around my area still call the plymoth barred rocks "Shanghi". Anyone else use this name? Not sure if its a old cajun name or not after watching The outlaw Josey Wales when the senator told captain Terraill "You beat the brush and root out everything disloyal from a Shanghi rooster to a Durham cow!" Just curious

Do you mean Shanghai? I guess that wouldn't apply to Plymouth Rocks, but it does apply to Cochins and Brahmas, since that's theoretically where they originated. I know that a lot of people where I am can't tell the difference between any of the breeds of chickens, so it might make sense that they're referring to barred cochins. Not sure though.

Yep I forgot the A. And nope, just about everyone from Louisiana calls a Barred Rock, rooster or hen a Shanghai, will have to ask my grandfather, I thinks is cause the roosters and get mean as hell. Had a rooster once jump on my father-in-laws leg while he had a brand new pair of pants on and the spurs cut the pants leg open. That particular rooster went straight to the gumbo pot...

Yep I stand corrected. I looked it up and seen where the cohins and brahmas came from Shanghai, China. Oh well, good info...thanks
