old deck for coop?

we bought our house about three years ago, and there was an old deck we got removed after it had to be cut in half for some plumbing to be done. we now have a half of this old deck sitting in our backyard, and we were thinking of using it as the floor of the coop we're going to build.

I am not very knowledgeable about building, so I wanted to know if there are any chemicals or anything that could be on the wood, or any reason why I shouldn't use this wood.

I would power wash it or scrub with a bleach solution, then paint it with something like "kilz" exterior surface sealer. Yes you can and should use it for the coop. If you keep posting questions on here you will get your answers! Good Luck!

Old decking for a floor would be a little tougher to clean then a smooth surface. I'd get some cheap sheet vinyl to put over the top. Then it would be easier to clean. Old weathered decking should be fine for chickens, especially under a few inches of bedding.

I agree with redoak, I am so very happy we have down vinyl on our coop floor. It makes sweeping and mopping each week very easy.

I think it would work fine, and save money. I might try to get linoleum (spelling) to put on top that would make it easier to clean and you wouldn't have to worry about what is on the deck. Alot of time lowes or HD has it left over in scrapes cheep. I used a old piece of deck as the roof to one of mine, just slanted it and put singles on top.

I think using materials you have around the house is a perfect idea for a coop. I agree with other here...I also listened to them and put a vinal floor in my coop...easy clean up!

Check out my coop below it was an old deck, I even got paid well to remove it from the House of my client.
