(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? - I grew up with my grandparents have Rhode Island Reds & gathering eggs or dispatching chickens was very normal to me. (my brother & I used to chase each other around with chicken feet pulling the tendons & making them grab at each other)
I am new to raising chickens myself & just got six "hybrid orpingtons" 11 days ago from a local farmer I ran into at TSC. I had no intention of getting chickens yet but, knew I wanted them. That's what chatting with people will get you; his eggs were about to hatch & a week later I was putting chicks in a new 110 gallon stock tank. Now I'm frantically perusing coop plan here on BYC.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? - six "hybrid orpingtons" who hatched on March 5 2023

(3) What breeds do you have? - "Hybrid Orpintons" my youngest daughter wants Silkes though & my wife wants some "Easter Eggers". We have barely gotten started & Chicken Math is already happening.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? - Eggs of course. I also like the aspect of meat birds but, keep that quiet from my wife & daughters. They don't want to know where dinner comes from; luckily I'm the cook. Also, I like the prospect of chickens tending the yard a bit as they forage. Finally, I like the fact I can fertilize the garden with the composted poop & kitchen scraps no longer need to all go in the trash.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? - I'm an avid fisherman & hunter. I also love to camp & practice what's become popular as "bushcraft". I read a great deal & enjoy, ahem, crocheting. (try not to envision a guy in a treestand crocheting a scarf while a deer walks safely by)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. - I'm newly married & the sole male bastion against a horde of five step-daughters along with my lovely wife. Coming from a family with all male children it takes some getting used to. 😜
Together, we have a Golden Retriever, four cats, two rabbits, and now six birds. I'm a computer nerd by trade & work for an "alphabet agency" supporting virtual desktop environments. I grew up in the 80's & spent three years touring with the Grateful Dead in the early 90's.
I took my username from a series of novels; if you know them, chances are we are pretty similar. If you enjoyed them, chances are we will get along famously.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D- I came across BYC while researching chicken breeds for fly tying. I more or less forgot about it until I decided to start my own flock then said to myself, "what was that awesome chicken message board I found a while ago?"
At first, I joined so I could bookmark articles but, figured it was rude to just lurk in the shadows like a fox in a hen house. (yep, I went there)
So, here I am!
Welcome to BYC!!
