Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

It says "do not put directley on to pet"

Okay I'm confused. What is its purpose? It says it's a poultry delouser. Sounds a lot like sevin dust. I use sevin on my pullets and cockerels just not on their faces. I powder them using a stocking filled with the dust as a powder puff. I also use it around the coop and run. So far no problems.

I just want to put it on my broody every week because people say that hens sometimes get lice when brooody and i didn't want to put it on her today because it says do not put directley on to pet, so i just put it in her nest and on the shed floor

have you had lice in the past? in the hen house? If not I wouldnt worry..... you could also use Diatomaceous earth dusted about too as a preventative. Its a natural earth not a chemical.

No. Don't put it on her until she has a lice problem otherwise you risk the bugs becoming immune to the pesticides and when you have an infestation you won't be able to treat it.

She should be given either DE or ashes to dust in to keep bugs away. You can sprinkle the dust in the areas where she dust bathes to kill bugs if you notice her bathing a lot.

My broodies were fine. I also changed their shavings when dirty.

Ok i didn't get a very good look today but she has never been showing signs of it although one hen does have quite alot of lice so i was going to put some on her but when it said "do not put directley on to pet" i just put it in the shed and on nests. By ashes do you mean like off the fire when you clean it out? also do i just put them in a box in her broody coop?

Well land sakes my 3 mamas have all kinds of room to wander around with their chicks and what do they want to do FIGHT, this morning i had to break up a fight between Isabelle and Scarlett thank goodness they were fighting through chicken wire so they couldn't get to each others chicks. Crazy things. and then yesterday my Mama hen Macey had her 2 outside and she puffed up at our gander, well that doesn't set well with him so he grabbed her by the wing since she had them spread out I had to stop that one before she got hurt so this morning I had chickens spread front to back with the gander in his on space. My goodness I have to sit outside and watch them they are acting like kids. Oh and i have a duckling trying very hard to hatch under mama duck I am a nervous wreck waiting on this little one.
