Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

On a different note, my Speckled Sussex that I had to take her baby away from her seems to have lost her mind. Is that normal?
Well tell her to join the club

I feel that way myself at times. Please give us symptoms?

Well she just kinda randomly runs around the yard and flaps and talks just randomly. She was usually fairly calm and now she seems kind of just nuts. I am sure it is just because she is out and about now after being broody, and then the silkie came ut with the babies and she started fighting her... maybe a dominance pecking order kind of a thing... crazy girl.

I am SO thoroughly enjoying my first broody, Onyx, and her babies. The babies are fearless around the rest of the flock. Onyx is such a good mama. Here are some photos I took yesterday:

"Hey Mom! How about a piggy-back ride?!"

"Me, too!"

"Good grief! They think I'm either a set of monkey bars or a trampoline!"

"There are seven of us are under here warming up!"

Your hen sounds exactly like my sisters Silkie!!
She had two Silkie hens, "Mo" went broody then Minnie went broody. "Mo's" eggs hatch first but only one made it. Then Minnie's hatched but still only one made it.
Then, "Mo's" baby was snatched by a cat.....

she called and called the baby for a long time. Then "Mo" started to attack everything and everyone!!! Including Minnie and the baby!
Now she got her wish, right now she is sitting on a clutch of eggs, due July 4th.

I'm so happy for her!!
