Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

a few pics. 1st Mama Reds lil ones doing fine on their own and accepted by the rest of the flock that lives in that coop. I even find them on roost sometimes in the morning with some of the big girls.

Mama and her lil ones tonight. Similar to the pic the other day, but just so darn cute.

Awh so cute! Glad they're doing fine on their own. Hope there's one less fox around. And agreed that pic in the cat cube is absolutely adorable!

Turkey number 4 is officially here!

Last night was hysterical. After work I went home to visit with them, and number three was at the very end of hatching. I was so excited that I picked it up to look and see how close it was to finishing. Apparently the answer was "super close", because it hatched right in my hands! I'm not sure who was more surprised, me or the chick. There was much blinking between the two of us.

Number five is entering the zip stage. Go little duuude!
Congrats they are adorable

Hi everyone! Boy you leave for a week and your 300 posts behind! Goodness!

I have missed this place! No broodies for me. I am still trying to get rid of mites and this congestion stuff! One of my silkie hens that I helped hatch is now blind in both eyes from that mess!

Ive been collecting eggs to keep anyone from going broody. One reason being my coop must not be clean enough for chicks all but one of Gracies chicks died last week (100 degrees). Poor things. I just feel like I cant win....

Anyways! I thought this was cute, I have a Cuckoo silkie hen that is a great mother. Well she isnt even broody but last night Gracies little chick ran underneath her and she squatted and let it be under her! I couldnt believe it! Of course Gracie went crazy but it was nice, like she was babysitting. :)
Hey Tripp I am battling mites too. Well I was. So sorry about your silkie hen and Gracies chick, I think alot of folks have lost chickens due to heat. I have been collecting eggs too no more broodys this year here.

Here is the update of the 2 day old chick that was pecked. I put the chick in a box with a stuff animal and the mirror, a little bit of gatorade and food in a box and a lamp around 10:30, before was with me all the time. The temperature was 94F. I found it dead this morning but it was a relief. I though it was going to make it since the peeping was very strong some times. But thinking clearly I believe the mistake was mostly mine, as I mixed Buff Orpington chicks with Blue Cochins. The first ones are flying and jumping that is a joy, and the 2 (now 1) little ones can hardly fly and are always behind. Next time I will not mix that difference on baby chick sizes.

I still dont understand how the hen left this chick behind, she has shown so motherly behavior the first time and one day with this chick that it is just hard to process.

Well, my chicken count decreased, but husband and I are thinking about two coops, one for bigger chickens and one for a brooding area with the mothers.

Thanks for the help.

P.S.: And I also learn that Bluekote was a paint and not a tape that was the first thing that showed in my internet search and it just not made sense. Thanks to all.
