Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

We had a storm come through this evening, and this was the little chickie doos first day outside w/ thier mom. She was trying desperately to get them to go in when it started getting stormy, but they weren't having any of it. Took thier mom (skyfire) and Gary both to get them in and skyfire wasn't all that thrilled w/ Gary's help. She absolutely wasn't going to abandon them though. When she couldn't get them to go in she called them under her and covered them for the storm. Gary got them in before it actually hit though.

Aw, what a good mommy,

And what a good honorary rooster!

She's such a good momma :)

I love seeing the mommas with all those extra feet when they're standing. And even cuter is to see the heads popping out from mommas feathers.

I went down to feed chickens this morning and see if egg #5 had hatched....
Well as I went to nesting boxes to look I noticed something in run under coop....
(My coop is raised 3 feet off ground) it was one of Caesars chicks limp and not moving.....
I went to fetch it very upset as I had someone check on chickens at bedtime for this exact reason :(
Well when I picked it up I swear it moved a tiny bit..... I huddled my hands around it and took it to the house put it under the kitchen warming light and fired up the incubator. It's now in the bator flailing about..... No coordination like when they first hatch.... I gave it a few drops of water and vitamins .... I figure I'll keep it in the bator got a bit and when it seems better ish bring it back down to mama hen.
What do you all think????

It's so sad it's legs are out in front it's obviously trying to walk but can't push itself up. Poor baby I really hope it makes it!!! Thank goodness for warming so cal nights!!

Chick is still alive .... In incubator but has the sick chick stance of legs out in front of it unable to stand.
I think this was probably the older chick that was born 3 days ago.
I gave it some more vitamin water but I have to leave for work. I guess I'll leave it in the bator with some water and hope for the best.

As for egg 5 .... Vanished. No idea where it went :(
Should have left it alone as Caesar was back on best this morning.
Oh well lesson learned.

Really hope the weather stays good tomorrow!, The two hens are so restless and are desperate to get outside!

Ok I think my Silkie Rooster (in my avatar) has regressed since his ladies hatched babies last month!
I have just been into the coop to check on everyone and Max is layed on the floor with Molly sat on top of him and her chicks tucked under her wings

Anyone else had a Roo act like one of the chicks to get attention from the hens???

*hugs* Heather x

Got back home after swim meet and found Topsy in her nest box sitting on the ping pong balls and Smokey smooshed in there too. Smokey had three eggs under her: her own, and one from Sunny and one from Snow White. I gathered all the eggs and kicked Smokey out. There's no telling when today she laid the egg and how long she was sitting. But if she's still laying she's not broody. Topsy seemed relieved to have her mortal enemy removed from the box and content to sit on her ping pong balls.

Nope but I bet that was a site. I have seen my roo in the nest box with a hen but never under one.
