Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

thedragonlady told me its because of cochins beeing bred into them years ago :)
Yeah it's just a slight flaw. You wouldn't typically want it to happen, but it can happen.

I'm glad only one of the two turned out to be a boy! :) You're keeping him too right?

I know about the weather too.. It's been terrible here since Friday.

Does she have feathered shanks? Weird! Nope look good to me

Ummm, sorry but IF you were to try and take her to a poultry show, she would be disqualified for her feathered shanks. That's a little more than a "slight flaw." However, she is a very nice looking bird and as long as she just lives in your yard, she's perfect!

Sorry but I don't like to tear people down by stating that it is a 'huge flaw'

Yes she would be disqualified, but from talking with John, he is not interested in showing these birds - so no need to tear down his pets. She's beautiful. Just leave it at that. It is a flaw. Not any worse than having a bird with a split wing.

I dont mind, she wont be for show, not of mine are for that, i have rescued birds that wernt good enough for show and were going to be necked, i just want her for laying, and she can go broody if she wants aslong as her mother goes broody im not too bothered if she does or not, yep keeping both chicks, hoping the maran cockerel will get on with my other one

what breeds do you have???

My yard bird flock consists of a few Buckeyes. The rooster has a disqualification... multiple spurs. Then I have some marans that are near perfect, from Bev in Florida, just a few hens. I also have a collection of mixed breeds and an old retired andalusian hen. My yard bird flock has about a dozen or so birds in it. Then my son has an assortment of bantams... a brassy back old english hen, a blue brass back old english hen, some speckled sussex and several rhode island red bantams with rose combs and about a half dozen large fowl ameracaunas, in unrecognized varieties. My daughter raises Golden Campine large fowl and the unrecognized Chamois Campine large fowl. I raise Blue Andalusians and I have a bunch of Delawares that I got for meat production. So, I've got quite a flock.
