Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here's a question! Just moved my broody box (a rubbermade tub) down to floor level. If I get a hatch they're due on Saturday or thereabouts. Here's the question: The box has about a 3" - 4" lip or edge at the door. When mom wants to bring the chicks out, is that too high for them to easily get back in? Should I cut it down lower? Here's a photo - you can see the lip - or edge - at the front entrance.
I'd leave the lip and add a small ledge to the front. Depending on how high it is, maybe a 2x4.

I just lay the piece of wood in front and let them use it as a jumping up point. My day olds have no trouble hopping up a series of 4x4s to get into the coop.

Good thought.

I already had to make some step-ups with wood and blocks in another area the I think will work over there. Now I need to go look for a 2x4~

I would add a little latter for the chicks to climb in/out.

I would just built up a porch for it till they figure out how to go in and out. Couple of flat boards would do the trick. I used a couple of broken stepping stones that for my dog house Just fix it so chicks can go all around the tub without getting stuck.

edited to add: OH my GAWD I didnt read the next page of all the SAME answers.... Hee hee

Welcome! Having read the entire thread myself, long before it reached such epic proportions, I would recommend posting any questions first and then reading the thread at your leisure. :)

Thanks! Well it seems I am working it out by reading December's posts and keeping current on them, as well as reading as much as I can from the beginning of this thread. It sure is packed with great information!

Just fill the box with more dry savings or straw or what ever your using at the moment.
