Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

how about 5days old chicks because mine are four
I think your still taking a chance, if your mama is sitting on eggs and they are hatching she might take new ones but at 5 days old and hatched in a bator and not under a broody there is the biggest chance the chicks would not accept the mama, plus the age difference, but your the only one who can make that decision, just be ready to step in if help is needed. and Congrats on more eggs hatching.

THANK YOU Miss Lydia..
I just met a person who is hatching on 9th and ill bring the day old ones for her.......
she just hatched another and now they are four...

Well my broody hen keeps getting on the wrong nest. Our eggs have gotten cold twice in 2 days. She refuses to leave the coop though. Thinking about ordering some eggs and getting a brooder. I don't know what else to do with her. She will get up to let others lay in her nest and as long as there is an egg in another nesting box she gets in the other box and stays there. I go down there several times a day to collect eggs but just can't always catch her in time. Any suggestions?

That is one reason I made a broody coop out of our first small coop we had, once they get serious and stay on the nest I move them to the broody coop that way i can leave them closed up for 3-4 days till they get use to their new place then open the door and let them come out when they want to, although i have had to go back in and get them off of a nest a time or 2 till they figure out where they belong. If i have more than 2 broodys then I just leave her and hope for the best, at least I am not working so i can check often to make sure they are in the right nest. Make a brooder out of an xlarge or large dog crate if you have one taking up space, they work great. there just needs to be enough room to put food and water and give the hen room then after she gets settled you can let her out 1or 2 times a day to do her business. I've used dog crates often and keep them inside the coop.

Thanks Lydia~
I am going to try to figure something out for her. I'm not sure about the eggs though. I'm thinking maybe I need to get more eggs for her. We don't have a rooster so we don't have any fertile eggs. We bought 4 fertile eggs a week ago and she has been sitting on those but I'm afraid they have gotten cold too many times. I have tried to candle them but can't see a thing..... I just don't know....

Wow I hope mini will be ok , I put her in a pet taxi with some food and water , I thought she would have room to poop and eat and drink but she just seemed to sit there so after like 3 days I opend the taxi and left the door open and put the food and water out infront of it , well with a half screetch half squack she came out about five minutes later and started pooping

, it would be the eqivelant of me pooping a duffle bag. 4 Large poops later and about 10 mintues of walking around and I put her back in with her eggs.

I mean Really is this normal for broody poop or was poor mini about to explode

In this cold it's possible they may have gotten too cold. but in the spring- summer when mine was moving from nest to nest sitting on just laids eggs while her eggs and nest was occupied with someone laying eggs she would probably be off the nest for a couple hrs at a time and believe it or not those eggs hatched. Can you use some chicken wire
and put it around the front of the nest box she is in? would you have enough room to put food and water in with her? I know some have done that. That way at least the other hens couldn't get into her nest to lay and she wouldn't have to be getting up. If you couldn't put food and water in with her you could get her out a couple times a day for drink food and poop. thats about all they get out on their own, some only once. I hope you can figure it out.

VERY Normal

Lydia - I actually candled 2 of the eggs and saw movement in both! I'm very excited! I'm thinking of buying a small brooder at Rural King and locking my other girls out of the coop during the day. They only go in to lay eggs anyway so I'm thinking I can set them up a space to lay the eggs and leave my broody girl in the coop where she can get out and stretch but not be confused as to what nesting box to get back in because it will be the only one with the eggs. Do you think that will really confuse my other girls for the next 2 weeks? I will either do that or come home from work every 3 hours to make sure she is on the right nest.... Not sure which would be best. I don't want to close her in the box. That just seems cruel to me. I want her to be able to get up when she wants to. I can fit a small food and water dish in the box with her but that is my last resort. We are in the process of looking to build or buy a bigger coop so we can have more chickens and to have a coop especially for broody moms....

Having a designated place for broodys I think is nice, I like the idea of being able to fit at least 2 of my broodies in the small coop I put a wall down the middle so there is 2 rooms completely private. If your working that will get pretty old having to run home to make sure she is on the right nest, so if you can then I'd go with the plan with the brooder inside the coop, I actually have nest boxes set up inside my goose house so their are nest boxes in the main coop and in the goose house They go into the goose house and use those nest boxes too. If you lock the rest of the girls out where would they lay their eggs?
