Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I gave 4 buff bantam Cochin eggs for my broody hen this new year.
But only one survive.
Still better than nothing.
Thia was her first time.

10 days left for my broody. She is hunkered down well. I put another hen in her box to help with the cold. It was -10 tonight when I locked up. BRRR

Thank you all for your input.... I have the heater in the coop and they are free to move away from it if they choose to. So far they have been cuddled up to it. I opened up the coop and they can go where they want to go. It was close to 0 last night and I was worried about them getting too cold just hatching. I will worry less about them as they get a little older

We set up our ceramic to keep her water from freezing, otherwise we aren't interfering... coop temp is around 21 degrees tonight, she's got herself hunkered down and is looking fine. She can get up when she wants. Now the hard part is staying out of it for us!
I will feel better after the weekend after the eggs hatch...

I had to laugh because I've done that a couple of times when I have early layers. I grab the eggs and stuff them under my BlackJack, a black CochinX, I can get them out from her later on & they don't freeze. She has been broody all winter. Which brings me to my next question: should I give her eggs or chicks, if the weather gets above zero sometime soon? The coop annex isn't insulated. I can't break her of her broodiness, I tried last time & she sat for almost 40 days in Oct & Nov. took a couple of weeks to get back to normal & back on a nest by first week of Jan. Any ideas for my preety girl?

Lots are doing it so why not give it a try. Mamas know what to do and can keep their chicks toasty.
