Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well 8 hatching eggs have been put underneath my broody hen Mary. (She became broody right after christmas...name seemed appropriate!)
Anything else I need to do? This is my first year with chickens & my first broody hen. I am sooooo excited.

just mark the eggs next time she gets up so that you can spot any extras added by other hens.... of course if you have her separated there wont be a problem.

I have some I just cleaned out! How do I do that with wiggly babies? They're 4.5-6 weeks old; 4 of them. Thinking....put some in a ziploc and zip the bird in the bag up to its' neck...shake shake shake? LOL! :lau

It's shake and bake and I helped! Lol

No just get some on your hands and rub it onto the little ones. They don't have much feathering so it should get on them good. Also if you have a place for them to dust bathe they can do it themselves. Oh and be sure the ashes have cooled completely first ;)

using a hen is much better than a incubator simply because the hen does the teaching
she protects, shows what is food and so forth and I still use an incubator some
