Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

It should be okay. The setting is supposed to help the air sac not be a jumbled mess, but I've put my eggs under the girls within a couple of hours and still had them hatch a few out. You'll probably get 50% hatch rate with shipped eggss. :)

Thanks bobbie. I never really thought about waiting specific amount of time. I did unwrap and set in eggcarton round side up.

Here is a Pic of Penny and her new chicks. She was on 7 eggs, but she was attacked by a raccoon or something on her 1st week of setting. Only 2 eggs survived the raid. And they both hatched!

Bunny is down to 3 eggs. The White Leghorn and EE eggs both were covered in yolk so I tossed them before they would go bad and one of hers had burst open under her. I removed the shells and she wasn't too happy.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your eggs. Does that happen often...I mean the bursting?
My broody has been sitting since Thursday and all is going well.

It can happen. She's a very large girl who is in a tight space with five eggs under her and others popping in from time to time. So I'm not surprised by the losses. If I had paid money for the eggs or was really caring about hatching, I'd move her to an area where she wouldn't have to compete for space. But I'm not that worried about it. If she hatches the eggs, fine. If she doesn't, then in about 19 more days I will move her out, clean her up, and hopefully break her of sitting.
