Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well this morning I went out to the coop and heard some chirping. Had 2 chicks hatch so far. They were all fluffy and dry so I assume they hatched during the night. Not sure if any of the other have Pipped since the broody didn't want me to close. The little Silver Ameracaunas were kinda of stumbling from underneath the broody. They couldn't really walk more of waddling. I'm going to leave them be. Ill check a little bit later to see their progress.

My Orpington is looking really ill at the minute, she is really skinny and pale in the face. Anything I can do to help her gain weight? The chicks are really taking it out of her.

I would give her electrolytes and ACV in her water. I had an orp last year that sat on mailed eggs that failed so I got Easter eggs locally that were infertile. After sitting for 40 days her chest was bare from her feather plucking to hatch the eggs and she weighed nothing, I just had to pull her from the eggs and she started to eat later that week.

I need advice again BYC peeps! mother hen has mites I have dusted her with mite powder, dusted the coop and hot watered bits I could but they are still around as she got them when she was sitting on the eggs! I'm worried (know my new chicks have them) what can I do help them out as they are so youn!,
HATE MITES lol but they are a fact of chickens

Ok I have a Jersey Giant that has gone broody, it has been 5 days or so. I have not gone in to disturb her and chance a break. I want to remove the eggs she has and give her some bator eggs. Is there a good time to do this, aka one week day 14 etc. Am I correct that once eggs hatch she will not sit on the week older eggs? The nesting box she is in is small for a Giant but I am not going to change that, it's in a dark area behind a storage bin. I had set it up there for an Orp that had gone broody last year but not now. Good thing birds don't read, Storey's lists Giants as never broody. That is why I am so afraid to get near her, I don't want her to walk.

Day 5 or 6 on my nesting BA and she still content to growl puff up and let me check for extra eggs. I was worried because I had a BA last year that wanted to brood... for 2-3 days at a time, then leave nest. With everything I have going on, and will have during the incubation I can use the help with a few eggs, This is my 1st time with a true broody and also have almost 100 eggs in the bator and 35 or so more coming. Not to mention my rouen pair are mating and she has been laying for a month.
Maybe she took pity on me and decided to help with the work. Either way I am hoping she has a good exsperience and will set again for me since this is my 1st broody incubation. Saves alot on the cost of a bator. I don't think its contagious in my flock. The others just want out of the coop. The exception to all this are my guinea hens. Last year we had 3 hide nest and 2 hens hatched them. We didn't even know about them until 1st nest got stumbled on (18 keets from this 1) and them we accidently found nest 2 after the 1st hatched.
So I guess I should say this is my 1st broody I know and can witness the incubation.
