Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

All six are still doing fine. They are much bigger now at 7 weeks old. Looking forward to some brown eggs from them in another 12 or so weeks.
They are RIR's aren't they? I notice you seem to have a lot of silkies and fluffy things like that so it will be nice for you to have some big/good egg layers that probably wont go broody!

My silky just hatched her 2 eggs, and she's still sitting, she has no more eggs , how long before she'll get up and show her baby chicks the world?

Mine stayed on the nest for two days after the hatch. Then she left it for good.

Yes - she is Australian Shepherd - they are so sweet - your little girl is very pretty as well! Does she like chickens, too??
sorry to take so long to reply but no she hates chickens ..... 2 broody hens right now ones hatch didn't go so well she broke 3 eggs and the last one was rotten and then my other broody hen she had 10 silkie eggs but she was attacked by some rats and they got all but 2 eggs and she has a bad gash on her . the rats must be huge because the gash is big but she is fine and she is one a new batch of silkie eggs and my other broody hen took the 2 surviving eggs and she is gonna try to hatch those

I don't feel like going through this entire thread but I hatched eggs in an incubator and they hatched about day 19 and into day 20. Do broody hens tend to go the full 21 days or can they be faster? I'm very inpatient, today is day 19 of my broody silkie sitting on 6 eggs.

They can hatch early but mine have hatched on day 21. Some even take longer than day 21 to hatch.

Hello everyone! I have a broody hen i just put 8 eggs under yesterday. Eek! I'm so excited to see if they'll hatch. She was broody in April too but it got to be day 26 and nothing. So we bought some chicks and put them under her. I'm hoping she'll get a few this time around because no one in our area has babies that I know of. I checked, i was going to let her be broody for a short time then sneaks some chicks under her. Try to shorten her broodiness lol. Oh well the long wait has started. Do you guys candle your broody hen eggs? If so, when?

Help?????

I was a little under the weather yesterday and therefore didn't check on my broody quite as much as normally do. She is 7 days away from day 21. She was somehow got off the nest and couldn't get back on. The door closed and shut her out. I don't know for how long. I checked her about noonish and then didn't go back out until I closed them up about 8:30-8:45pm.

Will I lose this hatch? I'm so bumming!

I don't know for sure since the time frame is so broad... but hopefully the air temps are warm enough that they will be OK. Don't give up hope, because broody's do some pretty amazing things. May delay hatch for a day or so. you may be able to candle them to check for movement but that is iffy if they are darker eggs.
