Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

So, had 2 hatch out of 2 last Monday (of course, I was out of town). It was this broody's first time. She abandoned one of the chicks, and despite our valiant efforts to try to save it, it died last night. The other broody was sitting on 5 eggs, 2 hatched yesterday and last night and she left the nest today. I put the other 3 in the bator, hoping that these will hatch. I'll give them a few days, then I'll give up on them. Has anyone had success with eggs hatching in the bator after the broody quit? I'm really hoping because I lost two of these eggs to a juvenile that she hatched out last time and only had 5 left. I ordered these eggs hoping to start a flock of Brahmas, which was the breed I originally wanted to have. We played broody fight over whose nest was whose for a few days after the eggs were placed, so the eggs got cold in the middle of sitting while they were working it out.
If the eggs were still warm and you had a chance to preheat your incubator, then there is a good chance they could still hatch. Keep the lid closed. Don't open it for a couple days or more. It could work.

I'm hoping. I noticed that one of the eggs moved around in the bator. Maybe the chick is still alive in there. Keeping fingers crossed!

Also, didn't preheat, but it was in the attic so it was already to 100 degrees. Within 10 mins, humidity was at 60% and temp to 100, so here's hopin', wishin' and prayin'.

Well, we got 2 sweet little chicks.
Amerucana a light little ball of fluff and a darker (that will hopefully be a blue/grey)
She is going to be called "pearl" after the Black Pearl (pirate thing arrrr)and because
I have a pair of black pearl earrings that I hope she will shine like.

The lighter one will probably end up being called "honey"

Tonight we put them under Momma. She is diligently sitting on her nest waiting.

So fingers crossed it all goes well.

Good Luck with your hatch
Thanks! I feel kinda bad because the other broody give up because her egg wasnt fertile and this egg on the pic was the one I swapped over :( Oh well, I don't feel that bad as she has already been a mama this year but her sister hasnt. I can hear faint pecks in the other egg so hopefully both will have hatched by tomorrow night when I get to go back up!

That's what happened when I picked up an egg.it chirped at me..then I tapped gently and it tapped back.........................
