Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Tonight's escapades involved just the Maran and her 4 chicks. And thankfully zero rain!

Caught up one baby and tossed it in the coop, turned to find puffed up momma coming at me. So snatched her quickly and tossed her inside. The other three were easy to scoop up as a trio. So all in all an easy night.

I'm. So nervous to go out and check....we lost one on monday who was pipping and never made it through the zipping....so I'm trying to calm myswlf before I go out....I'll be back!

So I still only have one piped...one egg felt a little cool so made sure it was under her well.

the pipped egg the chick is still alive, I can hear it. But has made no progress in 12 hours....I'm sure ive read this but as I said in my last post after loosing one Im a bit wary now.

Hang in there and trust the broody. She knows what's going on with the chicks and eggs.

My RIR had five eggs left to hatch and she hatched out three lovely chicks. But the other two eggs were first to try to hatch didn't make it. One she crushed under her and the egg had a partially developed chick. The other egg had a chick that hatched, either with her crushing the shell or it got crushed, and died. I was disappointed thinking she wasn't going to hatch anything then the next day out popped three healthy little fuzzy butts. I had thought I spotted a pip on one shell and sure enough a baby hatched.

:hugs

I noticed last night that the WL chicks used the step ups I made to get into the coop rather then the ramp. They are so adorable flying up a step each time.

Everyone was accounted for and huddled under mommas this morning thanks to a drastic drop in outside temps. It's practically fall like out there.
