Dad said there are never any guarantees but he would be far more concerned if their rolls were reversed. A good broody will brood above all else (according to dad). They do get tired but he doubts the other bird will phase the experienced broody.

I hope he's right. Good luck!!!

I was only 44 degrees out this morning. I feel badly for my motherless chicks, but hopefully they will be fine on their own. I think they are too small to keep in the coop with the big hens, so they have their own spacious stall but no one to keep them warm. I'm sure they'll be fine though! ;)

And that an experienced broody has heard chicks before and she should be in 'contact' with the chicks in the eggs she's setting on. She knows there needs, not only to be specific sounds but also movement under her breast.

He further said that if she didn't have a clutch of her own, she might be apt to try to abscond with the first other hen's brood but that she should feel content that she has her hands full now!

I really hope He's right!

She has had chicks with another hen who had hatched her chicks a day or so after but then the Java had been moved to a separate area to sit but came back to the flock as soon as hers hatched, this time she absolutely refused (which I wonder is because of the other broody and her association with sitting eggs in the coop) she had kept trying to cover the other broodys eggs every time she was up and outside so I just gave her some of her own... so he is right on with that, she went broody I believe because of the other hen.
I hope he is right also!

It sure makes sense

Bella's boy has been so naughty over the past couple of days! Yesterday, George was trying to mate one of the top hens and he took it as an opportunity to attack her, so off her went going for her and then she fell over a shovel and George fell off her and she turned around and all she saw was Bella's boy so she thought it was him and flapped at him and started chasing him around the feed pen! Thought he has learnt his lesson, but today Bella attacked my light Sussex Lacey and he decided to carry on going after her when Bella stopped and Lacey turned around and give him a beating, he then went for a dust bath with Bella and started pecking her and she got angry and stood up and give him a beating, and then it all settled down and he decided to mate Bella! (I tried to get a pic but it was a bit blury) once he stopped Bella got up and started on him and he started levelling her up! He backed down after a bit! Then the same top hen from yesterday came towards him and Bella and she like give Bella the evils and then brushed past her and Bella's boy chased her and jamp on her and she screamed, turned around chased him round and round Bella and poor Bella ended up getting a beating for it too! She wants to get rid of him now, he's getting her in so much trouble! You can see in the last pic when the hen turns and goes for Bella too!

My chicks have found a great home 2 weeks ago. I am so happy for them. They were getting big. I took pictures of them before they left and will try to post here. I've been having so much trouble posting at BYC lately that I fell afraid to post too long of a post

My hen still has loose poop.... Chicks are almost 3 weeks, and she still sleeps in a nest with them. Could holding it all night still have her system messed up?
