Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

omg Lydia, Hope is SO CUTE! Unfortunately it doesn't sound good for your little chick. There is still hope though! I'm glad your duck came back!

My 5 eggs are due to hatch Friday. I now have 4 broody hens.
One egg had a small crack in it last night almost like a pip. Do broody eggs sometimes hatch early?
Hopefully it will still hatch. It looked OK when I candeled it last night.

I normally work from home, but for the next few weeks am working 30 miles away in Albany. Today I got home to 3 NEW BROODY'S. The one that toyed with me the other day is finally sitting. I'll give her some eggs. Little" Blue "is broody AGAIN IN AN UNSAFE SPOT. I'll need to break her, and another Sumatra who is also in an unsafe spot. This make 6 out of 10 Sumatra hens that have gone broody since march."Blue " has gone broody unsafe spot...twice now! I said 20 pages ago at least, that all 10 were going to go broody on me. Looks like it may just happen.

In other broody news, Blue Mama Sumatra kicked her 5 little ones loose today. they are 4-1/2 weeks old. Just like the last Sumatra broody. This must be a Sumatra thing.

I'm off to give a Black Sumatra Broody eggs, and break little "blue" for a 2nd time! And break another Sumatra hen. I'm getting pecked tonight.....I can see it!

Just curious, what do you do from home? I work from home, too, and wonder if we're in the same industry?

I'm a medical transcriptionist… have been at it for 27 years now.

well crappers.

I broke little "blue" no problem. Took her egg and her golfballs (used to find her hidden nest) and she is roosting with the others. I took the egg and golfballs from the unsafe black broody sumatra, and she is roosting with the others. I knew better, but lifted the safe Sumatra hen to remove her golfballs, and found she was already on 2 real eggs. Well she FREAKED OUT! And is not on the nest now. I left her 5 eggs total, and am hoping she will resit in the morning. I really hope I didn't break her. She is safe in a shed, where the 1st broody of the year had her little ones.

but my ducks& chickens, I still have one hen broody on eggs.... and one hen broody on nothing, but even when the broodys are through I'll still be coming here to see pics and who is going through it now. Love them baby pictures.

Well Ms. FuzzyBottom is broody, again. She's been without chicks for about a month now. Only laid about a dozen eggs in between. I was going to collect some to hatch out, only got 3/8 hens in the last batch. But the good news is that I have 15 turkey eggs in the bator (day 10). She going to be getting those. I got the eggs about 3 days before she went broody, she will be getting those this weekend after I have candled them for clears and she is moved to a broody cage.

well my one lonley egg left under broody after the others dissapeared or got stepped on was a dud so i put 6 more under her she is wanting to sit still will know in a few days if she takes the eggs
