I know what you mean stony, I am on #9 and the only way i can keep up with it is because I put them on the calender.
Today mama #9 was outside a couple of times and I was concerned she might be giving up, but nope she just needed a break i guess, she is due to hatch this thurs. or fri. Baby duckling Hope is doing great. I will post some pics. if it's okay with everyone since this is really a chicken thread.
It's been a while - now that I'm not waiting impatiently for the eggs to hatch; I'm hanging out trying to "be a wall" so I can get good pictures & video!
So...the last time I'd posted, we had two hens still on four eggs. Those never hatched. The mommy that stayed with those eggs got three chicks from the feed store (the buff Americaunas). It turns out that these mommies don't seem to care which chicks they have as long as they have one or two with them. They almost always end up in the same nest but always have different chicks. Go figure
We also had one chick that fully hatched and seem fine at first did not live. It was a lot slower than the others, and was always underfoot. On the second day when the mommy was scratching - she scratched that chick about five feet across the yard and into a tree trunk. Both moms didn't seem to care - and it was left when the others moved on. So We tried taking care of it ourselves, heatlamp & electrolight, etc. Difficult lesson for me & the kids too
Out of 16 shipped eggs - 8 hatched. Not bad for first time mommies! (all of us!) 7 of those lived + 3 from the feed store = 10 happy chicks!
Here are the pics
Splash Americauna chicks
Blue Americauna chick (Blueberry! Our only Blue - hopefully a girl!)
Our lonely hen, Henrietta is now a good Aunt
And finally - chicks everywhere!!! Panda (Australorp) is such a good mommy! So is Juno (Giant Jersey) but not sure she would let this happen!
