Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

All parts of the state are beautiful with their own pros and cons. I guess it just depends on what you are looking for. You can pretty much find rural country anywhere, some places closer to cities than others. Most of the people I know would love to live in east TN to be near the Great Smokey Mountain national park. West Tennessee is not nearly as hilly, but it is close to both Memphis and Nashville.  The closer to the larger cities you move, the higher the cost of living.  I've lived in this state all my life and I love every part of it. Hope you find the place for you.

Hey nchls school. Come bring your chicken expertise to north west TN. I just moved to Paris, TN from the central coast of CA just a tad over a year ago. I love it here! Yes, the weather is definitely different. I found Paris by doing the online survey "FindYourSpot.com". Paris came up in the top ten every time I did it, so I checked it out a couple of years before I retired and it felt comfortable. Your ideal place may depend on what your interests are cuz, as KayTdid mentioned, it's all beautiful, just depends what it is you want and/or need to be happy (besides chickens). Good luck! (PS In case it's been awhile for you - moving itself sucks.)

I have an eleven month old Jubilee Orpington named Maisy who was insistent that she needed to hatch eggs, so I let her keep two to hatch just to see what she'd do, this being her first time going broody. I checked on her this morning and she had a cute fuzzy chick and is still sitting on the other egg. Sooooo cute:)

How adorable.

I hope I'm as lucky with my first-time broody.

Thank you for your response. My wife has two homes to look at near Paris next week.

I think I may have a broody. My Faverolle mix hen is in the nest box right now and its nighttime. I grabbed one egg that's been in the incubator for a day and a half and placed it near her. She tucked the egg under her after staring at it for a few seconds. When is it safe to assume she's "serious"? She isn't puffed up or anything.

I would give her a couple days, but Do remove the eggs under her daily and put "that" egg back in the incubator---you can put a couple fresh eggs under her then replace with a couple more fresh eggs twice a day till you get ready to set her-----I just use fake eggs. When you get ready to set her put ALL fresh(not a egg she was sitting on all day), marked eggs under her at the same time----then each day you look under her and remove any un-marked eggs-----doing it this way all the eggs will hatch at the same time which will be better for everyone than dealing with a staggered hatch. Good Luck!

Thank you for responding. The egg is now back in the incubator and a different hen was on the nest this morning. Maybe she isn't broody after all. The egg was still thankfully warm though.
