Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

They are consumable for several days. If you know what to look for and have a good light, you can easily see development at 5 days. If you only want to hatch hers, mark them and put them back under her. If you don't care about what she hatches, you can take the ones she has now, cracked them in a bowl and check for a bulls eye then collect new eggs from your girls and give them to her. I am making the assumption that you have a roo in the flock. ;-)

What's the cutest thing since Lacey duck? Lacey ducks babies!!! She has been hidden in the same field as Josie sitting on a clutch of 11 eggs. I knew about it for half of the time and left her to it as her last ones all got killed and she was gutted. She's so happy to be a mother and they are so cute! Love them!

Lacey wasn't the only one to become a mother to her babies today! I'm not sure if yous remember coco from last year? She was the one who has the baby ducklings that were killed by rats? Well she went broody earlier this year and all her eggs kept dying. I was praying throughout Lacey sitting that she would go broody so I could make use of all these babies. Well on the last week she did! Her sister Chanel was already broody, so I lifted the nest box divider up and they had one big nest with 3 of Lacey's eggs. Two have hatched and ones in the middle of hatching. I don't think Chanel will be the best mother but coco is showing to be great already, so I'm sure she will pick up the slack after Chanel. So happy that she's eventually a mother again, it's been a tough road for her!

Bed time for the babies! Happy to say the final baby who was struggling is eventually out and is tucked under mama coco staying warm that's 10 out of 11 eggs Lacey has managed. Think she has done great.

We currently have a broody barred rock and a golden comet taking turns being broody. They are currently sitting on 2 bb red old english eggs.

I have candle them and we seem to be between day 12 and 18. (Different times they were placed there for our broody girls)

We have more barred rocks, comets, austrolorps and of course the bb reds.

We do not have another spot to place the "momma" and chicks. The bb red hen isn't insterested in her fertilized eggs, only the two broody ones we have.

Our chickens free range all day and are in a large coop together at night. Should we let the chicks stay with the Hen who isn't a momma even though the other hens are around? Or should we bring the new chicks inside once they hatch, if they do? And if we do bring them in, when should that time be?

We have never hatched, but raised chicks several times over.....any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

I let mine brood and raise the chicks in with the flock. At day 18 I set up a barricaid so that other hens don't try to lay in the nest and potentially crush the newly hatching chicks. I make sure there is food and water available inside the barricaid and that gives mama a safe place to hatch. Since you are not sure of the exact age, you might want to go ahead and do that. Once the chicks are hatched, dry, fluffy and crawling all over mom and she has lost that glassy eyed broody look, I sit around and wait for her to bring them out of the nest to the ground and keep an eye out for how the other hens treat her and the chicks. I currently have a very respectful flock but I have had hens who wanted to attack the babies so that is something to watch out for.

That is one option. I hope I was able to answer you question. Good luck.

Thank you!

We have all our nesting boxes together and cannot really clock an area off. However, the golen comet never wants to move or does. So what if we put an old rabbit hutch in the coop away from the roosts etc and it is intensley lines with straw and moved her nesting area? Would that be ok? The hutch has not been used for rabbits for a long time and is not dirty. I can get to the hen and chicks through a side door....the chicks wpuld. Ot be able to go through the wire/mesh part of the cage...thats the only way for me to segregate them for awhile....

Some people have luck moving then broody and nest. I have never tried. They say to do it at night that it is more effective. Once the chicks are active, you want mama with them so let her out so she can protect them. You don't want the chicks squeezing out on their own. The only down side to putting her in the cage is if mama can eat and drink from the nest, she will do so. This also means that she, very likely, will not come off the nest to poop and then you have a poopy, messy, unsanitary nest. That is also something to consider.

Hope that makes sense.
