Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Quote:
We lost one today as well. A little chipmunk colored one. We brought it inside and held it and kept it warm and tried to give it food and drink. It just didn't thrive. There are still 4 out there that are with mom, scratching and seeming fine.

I'm glad your other babies are thriving! Our other two looked great this morning. Mama kept clucking at them to get them to eat more. It's adorable.

Them mamas are the best aren't they. I only have one mama with chicks now and I never get tied of watching her with them.

Mine won't touch the layer's when she's broody. I give her something special every day. But she doesn't eat much:
Dried mealworms
Scrambled egg
porridge
peas
sweetcorn
peas n corn from the freezer
rice with mealworm sprinkles
sunflower seeds
pumpkin seeds
dandelion leaves
lettuce
mixed wild bird food
bean sprouts

There should be something in there that will tempt her. She needs to keep her strength up!

I have Gwen and her two chicks partitioned with baby gates in a 2x2ft corner of the coop. They have crumble and water in there with them. When will she want to take them exploring further? She seems content for now just to sit and let them play hide 'n seek under her wings.

Well most seem to like it about 3rd day after hatch, but my last broody whos chicks are 9 days old had hers out the day after they hatched. It's comical to watch her she is full Game hen, her chicks are tiny bantams.

well it is day 18 for 2 of my Broody's. The one I could check on had a broken egg/dead chick yesterday. Today I came home to broken eggshells! I was excited until I saw the dead chick

. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. She didn't mind me taking the dead chick at all. It looks to me like she killed it. I am going to have to beleive she knows what she is doing......

BROODY'S SKIN TURNING YELLOW

I have a banty Dark Brahma that has been setting for about 10 days. Her skin (on her forehead and a bare patch at the base of her tail) is turning noticeably yellowish. I see her off the nest sometimes so I think she's eating and drinking, but I can't tell for sure since she shares water and feed with another broody. She has set for almost a month before without turning color. I'm wondering if some vitamins, ACV or electrolytes would be a good idea?

Wow. In people that can be jaundice, ie liver problems. Maybe dehydration. I think I would pull her off the nest and make sure she eats and drinks.

Probably be a good idea to add some electrolytes to her water ,would help keep her hydrated.
