I was able to sneak chicks under a broody of mine. I did it at night and with as little light as I could get by with. The broody only had 1 chick and I bought 5 at the store and snuck them under her. She took to them faster than they took to her, but after a few days you wouldn't know they were foster chicks. Good luck! This go-round with the chicks has been disastrous! Buffy decided not to take the best care of her chicks... The chicks were not helping, they were not really listening and following her like they should have been, and I think she just decided they weren't worth it. We took away the last two, and they are now inside.
Only one chick hatched inside, and I had to help it because it got stuck, but it is doing great. I cannot wait to see how it feathers out.
The Black Australorp has 3 chicks, and is viciously keeping everyone farther than 4 feet away!
So, now we have 6 chicks. I really do not want to raise more chicks inside. I wonder if I can sneak these 3 under the Australorp... I might just give that a try, but I don't know if it would work.
@NysiaAnera Sorry to hear about the issues. My pullet that was setting in the bushes hatched 8 of 11 yesterday, though left the last hatched and it got chilled. Brought it inside and warmed it up under a lamp and put it back under her at night. Seemed to be doing okay today, just a little slower and less steady on its feet than the rest.
I will be most interested in hearing how this goes as I plan the same thing if and when my larger breed hens go broody. What kind of turkey eggs? Where did you get the eggs? I'm hoping to find some midget white turkey eggs. My bantams brood constantly, but could only brood two, three at best, turkey eggs.I have a broody! A mistake broody, a Black Sex Link chicken. I'm going to give her turkey eggs...![]()
I never heard of this happening with a broody hen. How disappointing for you... Sometimes things just go wrong. Hopefully next time will be different. A while back I had three serama broody hens on five eggs each-15 eggs-all DIS except one and that one is 14 grams at three weeks of age today; feathers are growing but the body size remains about the same size as when it hatched-I have no real idea why. The chick does appear healthy, but...My sec broodys eggs aircells where all on the sides took them as they were dead put her back in with the others she obvioulsy over turned them or never turned them
