How is everything this morning? With that many eggs under her the little on could have just gotten caught in all the eggs and smothered. If she had killed it it would have been bloodied. They are pretty fragile when first hatched. I am sorry this happened, but I think you did the right thing by leaving some with her. Please keep us posted on whats going on.

Well good news went out to feed the chickens last night and there was a little chick peeking it's head out from under my broody

Hello guess I am joining this thread yet again. I have another broody white EE. She had been sitting for the past few days, so yesterday I finally gave in and marked 4 eggs for her. I can't spare too many eggs because I have customers and this extreme heat has caused some of the hens to slack on laying. Plus she was one of my better layers! Oh well. I am curious though to see what the chicks will look like- that is if they hatch. All four eggs she is sitting on are RIR and Barred Rock eggs. The only rooster I have is a Black Silkie... hmmm. They should be interesting to look at! lol

So I guess we will wait. Due date is August 1st.

One of my broody hens eggs hatched a lil early, the chick had only the top part of the beak one NORMAL leg, one leg that was morphed into its head and NO eyes!!!!
I culled the chick as soon as i saw it, YUCK.
what could have caused this?
the egs arent due until the 17th (5 days from now)

I sure couldn't tell you, but I am sorry you had to see that it had to have been upsetting. I had a hen hatch out 2 chicks and proceeded to kill one and started to kill the other, I intevened and tried to save it, now looking back wish i hadn't come on the scene when i did, mama knew what she was doing and something was wrong with both chicks, the weather was brutally hot but my broody was ever vigilant, so i don't know what causes deformaties like you saw and me too, but I'm sure your hen would have taken care of it if given a chance. Again wish i had the answer, but I do hope the rest of your hatch goes with out complication, let us know.
