I'm pretty excited! My 1st 3 broody Sumatra chicks started laying! I found 3 tiny Sumatra eggs this morning! They were born on March 21st. 2 Stunningly Beautiful Blacks and one BEAUTIFUL blue hen. The roo from that brood is a small Blue roo. I'm SO happy they started laying.

I have a silkie that is broody and has been sitting on 5 eggs (even though I have plenty of chicks for the year -- I don't need anymore!). I have a dark cornish that went broody this spring, and yesterday she decided that she wants to be broody again too! (I don't need anymore!!!!)

So here is my question: Do you think it will work to just put in her the nest with the silkie?

For those of you who have had hens share a nest, did you decide to put them together or did they?

I have WAYYYYYY too many chicks as it is; I don't need anymore! My chickens are all hatchery birds; I thought they didn't generally go broody; I mean that is why I got the silkie. I guess it really is contagious.

As i said before , we thought tomorrow was the day to hatch but now we are not sure..
please let me know what you think this means

The broody Frizzle Millie keeps lifting herself up and slightly moving , looking underneath her-
I am assuming she is doing this all of a sudden because she is feeling movement from the egg.

How long does it take once the egg starts moving til hatch?
I work from 5pm til midnight tonight & I really dont want to miss this , its our first hatch..

Hopefully you won't have to miss it either!!!! let us know and Congrats!!! if it's pipped then you should be able to hear peeping, so go listen. And mama is regulating humidity.

Faith Hope i have 2 broodys sitting in 2 diff. nest. They have been broody seems like for ever, I tried taking them out, they would go right back I even closed them out of the coop in the afternoon after everyone was finished laying. I finally gave up, they will get up eventually, so I'd just leave her alone and not put her with the other hen, she'll get over it . I do have to go and check under them daily because if someone lays they usually go int that nest and lay on the egg, and sometimes the other hens will lay in the nest the 2 girls are in so I check under them daily. One day one of them was so desperate she had rolled a duck egg under her.

We were staring at her to listen for peeping , and clear as day we heard it.... But we also came to the startling conclusion that mamas got lice
th.gif
no nits but definetly adult long flat tiny bugs that from what i have read are poultry lice...
First time with poultry lice , this broody is still in the last week of her 9 week quarantine...
so now im waiting for this chick and the joy is overcome with the stress of knowing i have to treat mama with sevin dust? will that hurt the baby if moms covered in it? should i treat the chick and if so when?

I really wanted to film the hatch but if your saying lifting mom up will hurt the chick , shrink wrap or something like that , then i wont.

Fuffy they are so cute. My 2 that are 8 weeks are still with mama too, ain't it cute. Thank goodness mine are both pullets.............

Stony, one of my pullets from first hatch of season [April 6th] is thinking about laying, i noticed her in the coop a couple of times and she has been hanging out with one of our roos and today she was inside the coop singing with the other hens, it's so cute. Congrats on your eggs and your lil roo.
