Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

You will have to brood the new babies inside. First off there is too much age difference & second that will be WAYYyy too many babies for one hen. You said 20 something right? Yeah to many.

Oh wow! Guard the nest? How do you even begin to do that? I can see myself camped out with a sleeping bag...oh how I wish I was fully kidding.

If I am this bad with chickens, heaven help my daughters when they have babies!

Also LOVE the momma and baby pics.

6 is a good number ad won't over whelm her or you.. teehee. wait till the chicks hatch then move her, once you move her as long as it's private she'll stay there with her babies. a box or crate would be fine you just want the chicks to be able to get in an out with out problems. yes sometimes they get confused if they see eggs in another nest they will lay on them and her original eggs will get cold, so be extra careful to keep eggs picked up. and be sure to mark the eggs she'll be hatching so the don't get mixed up with any of the other hens may lay in her nest. you've marked the pullet eggs but your taking them away when you get the new eggs. so be sure to mark those. she'll stay off the nest maybe 30 mins or not even that long. and maybe longer, but most of the time 30 mins is about it.

Thank you! I think what you said about not moving her from the nest is the way to go for me. I feel like the more I mess with things, the more I'll mess it up! As for eggs, yes she has some 5 blanks under her right now, marked. I leave them but don't allow more to accumulate? Correct? 21 days...oh my...yesterday and today seemed to last forever.

Right take out any new eggs, but remove the blanks when you set the new fertile eggs under her. so you'll need to mark the fertile eggs so you can continue to take out any eggs laid during the 21 days. you'll be fine, now you know how an expectant father feels waiting for his child to be born..

No there would only be 8 babies, the 3 that are hatched and hatching now and then the 5 eggs that will hatch in 2 weeks from yesterday.

we have so much rock it's really hard to drive a fence post or dig one in. Can all the chickens see your 2 little ones? I still have 1 mama with hers they are 9 weeks old, I saw the roo trying to separate mama from her chicks so he could have his way with her this morning, but she out smarted him..

Yes, Miss L...Everyone can see everyone else

The rabbits seem to chew holes in my fence overnight, which is ohhhh so inviting to a silkie-sized baby buffy. So I have to go round with my eagle eyes on and 'sew' it all up with snippets of electric tape.

Dogs, horses and chickens of varying ages all need to supervise me while I run around in my nightie and crocs being stung by nettles and poked by twigs

I have built essentially double size nest boxes down low in my coop which have screen doors so that I can lock up birds - roosters, when necessary, new birds, AND broodies. I think you will need a door because your broody might try to return to the old location and to prevent the other girls from interfering with her. A cat/dog carrier would work. If you lock her in, however, you have to make a point of letting her out each day.

My broody stays off the nest from 10 minutes to half an hour. Miss Lydia can probably answer that question FAR better than I can.

As long as she is sitting on blanks, it doesn't really matter if more accumulate as long as you toss the whole lot when the real eggs go under. And make sure to mark those real eggs because you definitely don't want anything added once she's brooding the real thing.

I'm so excited!!! The 3rd egg just hatched!!! Later I'm going to move the other 5 eggs into the bator and hopefully they will hatch on 9/6
