Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Look at that FACE! Have fun Hillbilly - I have to say, I thought it would be an amazing, interesting experience, but I was bowled over by the whole thing way beyond what I thought I would be. One of the most amazing (and fulfilling) processes I've experienced. And watching the babies and mother interact as they grow has been just as fulfilling. This morning I got up to find two of the babies on the lower roosting pole with momma! They're growing up so fast!

I don't know for sure what the other five are, but they could be EE, Ameracauna, Welsummer, Golden Lakenvelder or Blue Laced Red Wyandottes -- can't wait to see what I got

I still have eggs in the incubator, but none are pipped. I checked them out this evening, and threw out a few that were VERY stinky & sloshy sounding

Thank goodness I caught those before they exploded. The others are not smelly & don't slosh when i very gently shake them, but there is no peeping or anything...should I leave them in there for a few days more? I candled several times through the process, and these guys were all developing well.

I went out this evening to check Miss Broody Pants and the babies (both ones she hatched & the two I transferred) and all are doing great! Also, there was one chick that had shrink wrapped in the egg -- I got there JUST IN TIME and got him out!!!!!

I stayed there for about 30 minutes cleaning up the hatching area & getting the chick feeder/water set up and he was up & walking around (a little) when I left. Fingers crossed for the little fella -- he was pretty wobly & kinda pathetic looking

I'll be naming that one Lucky if he/she makes it!

and to everyone else with new babies -- CONGRATS

Yes, ma'am! I'm going to try to get pics on Sunday -- we're working cattle all day tomorrow, so I won't get a chance to get out there, but I am very excited to get pictures of the little cuties

Thank you!! They are still doing okay -- I checked this morning, and there were no little guys kicked out of the nest

Yay! I just love a good momma hen. They may be my new favorite thing.
