I've got a broody Sumatra on 8 eggs that is going to hatch soon. That will bring the new broody chick total this year to around 30. I'm too tired to do the math right now and get a real number....

Your broody hatch for this year exceeds my total chicken count by 11. {sigh} maybe someday I can be special enough to have so many chickens I lose count!!

So sad! From 12 shipped eggs:

5 hatched

2 were dispatched at 2 weeks due to obvious boy-ness

1 died when they went to live next door to the grown ups

And 1 is a kazoo

End result ONE 13-week-old pullet!!!

WELL THAT WAS WORTH IT!!!

I've got a problem. First, I'm very excite to report our first chick! I just checked Ms. Pancake and there was one fluff ball under her wing. I cleaned out her pen and changed water and food and with all that commotion, she decided to take a walk. This let me to see the chick and the remaining 13 eggs still in tact. I found half of a broken shell and removed it. It's a few hours shy of 21 days exactly.

Now here's the problem. I helped her get back to her duty and she went into the nest box she pecked the little chick pretty hard. Is that normal? Is she saying, don't move from here? Or is she saying, what's this alien in my nest? What should I do? I don't have a separate brooder space set up and that would take some doing and I worry about all the other eggs hopefully on the way.

Yikes!
