Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Here is Lily with her 4 week old babies....

Such sweet pictures I just love them all, have you maked her eggs just in case one of your other hens decides to add to the collection, or has she been able to keep them out?

I did mark the eggs

..... I had one my BO put one in there today......She is going to be my trouble maker

because she always lays her egg with Mama, even before Mama became broody...... Hiedi (she is the smallest BO I have) tried to lay her egg in the box nest to Mama today but I guess she couldn't and had to lay it in Mama's box...... I will make sure I look everyday..... I made the mistake with Lily of not checking the last few days because when I did check Lily's nest nobody laid their eggs in her nest but to my suprise Grace my only EE laid her 1st egg in her box I kept thinking to myself wow why did one of my eggs turn green

I had marked Liliy's eggs but because she was close to lockdown I was afraid to mess with her and the eggs.... It was my 1st time with a broody........I lost 2 of the babies I think because of the 2 eggs that were not supose to be there. They were in the process of hatching but I think were kicked out because of the two eggs that didn't belong there.

I have a lone chick that just hatched yesterday and I don't think any of the other eggs are going to hatch. I have a broody (I think), she has been sitting for a couple of days now. Can I put the chick under her and see if she will take it?

Probably.... put it under her at night but if shes sitting on eggs you may need to put them in the bator.

Did you try putting the chick under your hen? you really have to be careful when doing that because sometimes it can turn violent. I hope everything turned out good. please let us know.

it can be done. I've done it with mixed results. Sometimes it works. Othertimes the hen kills the chick.

lol, doing great. Still super busy in the shop building furniture. The band played out last weekend. Remodeling a room. Doesn't leave much net time. My beautiful wife is getting herself prepared for her new self employment journey. She finally realized I was right. Being your own boss is the best!
Then chasing chickens out of my workshop keeps my pretty busy as well. Sammy and "mama" were in checking it out today. mama almost got stepped on. She is always right under my feet. Totally trusts me. This is the blue one named mama, not the shop broody. Shop mama is still sitting tight on her eggs.
