Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I am amazed at how popular this thread has become. I update the first two posts to include to PM me with FAQ updates as I don't want the info to get lost in the shuffle and speed of this thread. If you want something added to the FAQs just send me to a PM.

It is almost spring... I can't wait for my broodies to start their work!

WOOOHOO!

For what its worth I noticed the lack of notifications and found this trouble shooting thread on that very subject.

They are trying to fix it through our feedback. I wound up logging out then logging back in with a couple of tweaks and it looks like my notifications are coming in well.

well I tried a few things...we will see if the "improvements' will work. I'm not big on this new site. Not liking it.
I hope I get this fixed...

well if she was teaching him a few things, she taught him a few more things this morning

. She did however spend much of today with Sammy. I can tell it's february. Boys guarding the girls nests. Which helps me find the eggs as a bonus. Rooster fights, young hens running at ful speed with a young roo running behind her at full speed, the girls flying to the tops of trees, the roof of the house, whatever it takes to get away from the boy chasing her, featherless necks. YUP broody season is right around the corner
She was probably teaching him a few things stony

I'm glad she is OKay. they can really scare ya. One of my youngest hens was acting off the other day, and of course I over react but you just never know with these guys, I caught her when she went to roost and fed her some Nutri drench by mouth and put her to bed with a prayer, yesterday she seemed fine so I was relieved. Haven't lost anyone since we had to put our hen to sleep with ascities late summer and I don't want to have to do that again anytime soon. Won't be long before Broody season will be back up and running... and your right Niss this thread has kept me going all winter with others still having broodys and chicks. Thank Ya'll so much

I have my first broody!!! She is a Nankin mix in the pen with my D'Uccle roo(mille fleur). I'm excited & nervous at the same time. My nest box is about 3 foot off the ground..I know if I try to move her..she will leave the nest. What is the best way to protect the chick from falling but allowing mom to continue doing what she needs too? She is only setting on one egg...wish I had more under her.

Stony, they are still working to find a fix. For right now, email notifications aren't working for many of us - including Nifty. Hang in there!!!

well I read the thread, and went to my subscription page, and unclicked the "pause" thingy. so far, I am getting notifications. Until the next "improvement".

yep- just bookmark your subscription page and check it periodically, the wrinkles will get smoothed out eventually..:?

on the broody front- still have an ee sitting on the other ee's egg that was snuck into the nest, need to get her shifted, but she isn't going along with the idea very well....

When I unclicked the "Don't pause", I got notification of EVERY single post to any thread I had subscribed to. Some of my subscribed threads are BUSY!! So I was getting literally hundreds of notifications a day - whether I checked in or not.

I've book-marked the BYC home page and check for updates to my threads that way at this point.

I like the multiple notifications. Because I can read the comments without having to go to the website if I dont want to. But if I do I just click on the link for the very first one and delete the rest because I am going to read them on the website anyway. But then I can sort by topic with Mozilla.

Woo Hoo I am picking up my Welsummer chicks tomorrow. They are in at the feed store and waiting for me to get there. I made arrangements for them to stay there till I can get free of some family obligations.
