Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have always been told NOT to leave them in the same coop because as the chicks hatch, the other non-broody hens will peck at them and usually kill them. Have you ever had this prob? I have an 8x8 coop with 6 nesting boxes, 12 hens and 1 rooster. I also have 1 very popular nesting box, but if I don't have to move my broodies I'll move them to the less used boxes, cause already the other hens just sit with the broody to hatch their eggs, (found out that our nesting boxes are big, I've found three hens in the same box at one time). But I'm kind of afraid to move her, cause as soon as I remove her from her eggs and she sees they'r gone, she leaves. She stays right by the nest squaking at me while I'm taking them, but then when they're gone, she leaves. I would want to move her, so I don't have to worry about the other hens trying to lay eggs after hers have hatched. Have you ever had these issue? First timmer here.

Most of the time the other members of the flock will not mess with other hens chicks, now i won't say they won't peck them or kill them I'm sure it's been done, but I had most of my broodies last year in the coop with their chicks and except for some pecking if chick strayed to close to another hen all went well. my coop is 8x10 and i have 2 roos and 12 hens. actually had more hens last year. One of my broodys is in the fav. nest box and it's about 21/2' above the floor so i will move her eventually because the chicks won't be able to get back in the nest box when they leave. I have her eggs marked and so far none have laid in her nest, but if they start I will remove their eggs and probably move her to another smaller coop and close her up for a few days to make sure she is settled. you can use a large dog kennel to do the same if you don't have another placve to close her up. I had my ducks use a large dog kennel last year for brooding. My broody is bantam and at least 3 other hens can get into this nest box too. But take a washable magic maker and mark the eggs that way you'll know hers from the others and can remove the others. All the best and keep us posted.

Checked on Smokey she is doing fine. She did get off her nest at some point because the other food dish showed she had moved the feed around & there was an enormous poop nearby the door. I love the idea of a broody - but PHEW I could do without the big stinky poos.

My problem was with broody mama! She was trying to kill all my other birds, defending her brood - and none of them were even paying any attention to her or the babies. She was CRAZY! I did have to cage her and the kids for the first little while when they were confined to the coop in order to ensure she didn't hurt anybody. She seemed happiest that way as well. They were fine when free-ranging because everybody could steer WELL clear of her.

Anna Karenina was all pancaked out in the box just now

I can't tell you how much I hope she is going broody...she's usually skittish and she seemed kinda dazed, let me move her around--she had 4 under her. We'll see. If she does I will be buying day olds (I really want Speckled Sussex and Black Austrolorps)...how many could I give her? She's a silkie almost a year old, never been broody before (may not be now, but a girl can dream)

Hi everyone!!!! I am sooooo excited!!

I think I have my first broody hen! She is a hen I raised after her brother was killed and she was the only one left so I raised her now she is setting on her nest screeching at me and all fluffed up when I reach in. I am going to see if she stays on it during the night and if she does I will get some eggs for her tomorrow.

My only problem is she is a tiny BB Red hen and she has 8 of her own infertile eggs under her. My friend that Im going to get the eggs from only has standard size hens. Will she be able to hatch standard size eggs? I know I cant fit 8 under her but I was thinking like 3 or 4. What do you guys think?

I have always wanted to have broody before!

Are there any signs if a hen will go broody soon or does it just happen all of a sudden?

I don't have a huge amount of experience with broodies but the broody I did have worked up to it over a week or two. She spent longer and longer in the nest box each day. Spent more and more time on her own, apart from the flock. She got grumpy with everybody. And she ran around the yard looking like a flowering cabbage (wings open and down). Eventually, she was glued to the nest box and didn't come out at all. A couple of days of that and I put hatching eggs under her.

I wouldn't overwhelm her with eggs, especially if she's a first timer. 3 or 4 is probably perfect especially if they are big eggs. Good luck!!!
