Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have an egg rotation question. I went and checked on my girl this morning and was looking at how she was on her eggs. One that I picked up wasn't as warm as the others and was only partially under her. Do they rotate their eggs and heat them up as needed or what? When I did candle that one I saw the shadow of a spot!

yes, I've watched them in action. They rotate the center eggs to the outside, and the other way around. They will only partially sit on certain eggs at times. Sometimes not sit on one at all for a while then move it back under themselves.

I never candle before day 10. Others do sooner. That is if I candle at all. Most often with a broody I don't bother

Sorry if this has been answered already but my hatchery wyandotte has just started going broody (no roo). What kind of time window do I have to get some fertile eggs under her? Plus can you put other poultry eggs under a hen? or do the times and humidities not match?

As long as she is sitting on eggs go ahead and get fetile ones then when you get them go out in the evening when everyone has gone to roost or after dark and remove the non fertile ones for the fertile, as stony says broodys can not tell time she'll sit till they hatch.. but don't forgeet to let us know with lots of pics.. as far as other poultry eggs some one who has done that will have to chime in..

So would you say it is bad to candle a broody hens eggs? My broody is on day 10 and tonight she will be on a day 11. I havent candled yet because I was afraid it would be bad for the eggs, plus the nights have been cold so I didnt want to give one a chill. Its supposed to be warmer tonight so I thought I might give it a try,

Why dont you candle? I would love to hear so I dont mess something up if I do. Thanks!
