Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Just came in from feeding the girls..... Popcorn was up drinking. That's the first time I've seen her off the nest. She immediately went back in. Good broody :D
My alpha hen laid her egg on the coop floor! This is a first for her. Wonder if she wanted to lay in popcorns box hmmmmm. Thank goodness it's the weekend I need to sit with the chickens and see what's going on!

Suzettes at day 20 (as of this evening?) so am anxious. Don't hear anything in eggs(held 2 up to my ear-boy she keeps them HOT) but given my ignorance maybe OK. She was off nest for 45 min yesterday but sounds OK from what i have managed to read on here. And was extremely gentle when holding eggs. Suzette was po'd so I didn't stay long.

I am so excited!! Yesterday one of my broody's eggs was pipped, so I patiently check every three hours to see if any progress had been made.

When I went out this morning, there was an adorable little yellow chicken, and the other egg has started to pipp!! I'm like a new mom all over again. I'm so excited that the wyandott actually set the whole time, and that the eggs I picked were fertile and are hatching! Broody hens ROCK!!!

Our first coop was 3X4 and since building the larger one I use it for broodys that get picked on for one reason or the other, I had hardware cloth down the middle to make 2 rooms well Miss Scarlett my first broody of the year did not like being able to see into the other space where Issabelle is set up so i just took some boards[scrap] and made a wall about half way up so they can't see each other. No problems now. And congrats on 2 broodys. our next hatch days are 23-24th so we'll be hatching close..

OK-Got my camera card emptied and put on computer so camera is ready for possible hatch(s)(no easy feat for me) and I THINK I HEARD A PEEP IN EGG but its hard to tell when the girls in nest area are making sounds and outside birds are tweeting. wishful thinking maybe. Could I bring one of suzettes eggs in the house(about 40' from chicken shed) and listen there?

You could. But I wouldnt mess with it. Leave it under mom and let it hatch. There will be plenty of time for you to hold and see those chicks when they hatch.

I always find something to do during hatch day so I dont constantly pester mom and the new ones.
